Edgar Varese/squarepusher link ...
the weirdest thing is that the night I saw Squarepusher it was in the Warp/ Lindon Sinfonietta tour - where they played Ionisation by Varese. Also lots of other stuff such as Ballet Mechanique by Antheil.

Listening to the Hard Normal Daddy album right now. I think he is brilliant.

Yeah, I love a lot of Squarepusher's stuff, he was one of the poeple that got me in to electronic music... hard normal daddy and big loada are my faves. I can't get into his last two records though, shame. Just don't like them.

I saw him at a Ceephax gig (ceephax is his little bro') when I was a bit wasted, well, er, very wasted, and I think I might have had a chat with him... but I'm not sure, I might have just gone up to him in a drunken state and tried to shake his hand or something... oh god, I'm such a twat when I'm drunk.

I got asked at a gig recently if I could 'stop playing that squarepusher crap and put some dub on', quite a compliment I thought, seeing as I was playing one of my tracks at the time! I told them to fuck off, I hate it when people make requests when you're trying to play. I want a t-shirt with 'no requests - fuck off' wirtten on the back to wear when I play...

We used to do a few gigs in Ireland where there is still a big hangover from the 'showbands' where requests are pretty much the basis.
I would normally be actually playing baslines with one hand and chords on a split with the other ... gurning, tring to maintain my crappy rhythm. Suddenly a sweaty goon would appear over the top of my synth .. asking: " can you play 'children, by Robert Miles?"

the rumor is that Squarepusher did his first disc with a mic, a bass, an Akai S1000 and C64. Im pretty sure he used recycle alot to slice up performances and retrigger the slices with the sampler.

I can only think of a few songs that he has used the amen break and that seems to be mostly on his more conservative Ragga/Drum and Bass tracks.

the rest i am pretty sure he just samples himself and uses his own drum sounds...cause yeah im pretty sure he is a banging drummer as well as one of the most kickass bassplayers in a while...Music is Rotted one note is a pretty good example of that.. i think his father was a drummer as well.

im sure there was a switch and that computer use is more prevalent now.

whatever, im glad we dont know. it makes it more fun trying to figure out what the hell he is doing. figure out how you think he did it and then create it with the tools you have available, Live or whatever...and then it will sound like you and not someone trying to bite Squarepusher...

you people must be on crack. he doesnt use the amen break often? You need to review your square pusher collection, son. Samples himself? Dude, his drum samples prior to Ultravisitor, though properly soundfucked, were almost ALWAYS classic dnb loops. the Think loops, he uses those ALL THE TIME. If you dont know this stuff, then you really NEED to buy the JW collection, and do your studying.

On another note, No question jenkinsen would look silly next to Varese on anyday. I dont think even Pusher would think to dip a gong in water.

Also if you think squarepusher is a good drummer, listen to Ultravisitor. There are some tracks in there with some of the WORST recorded drumming I've heard in years. No doubt he played them, but he is in no way a "banging drummer" unless the banging is just loud raucus bad drumming. There a few tracks in there where there is virtually NO time correction, and it sounds HORRIBLE.

But man that sinfonetta show sounds horrible also!!

this is Video ofJamie Lidell at the Warp Sinfonietta gig That's the Royal Festival Hall one.

His (JL) bit was fantastic IMO - so no reason why Squarepusher couldn't have matched the standard.

warp are going to release a live Jamie Lidell DVD in a few weeks aparently.

JL's new site has a few vids on it, including that one pretty interesting (to me at least)

ummm thanks. why dont you school me instead oh wise one? send me a link to these almighty Think loops. yeah the dude uses the amen break i said that...but c'mon half the albums are his beats...music is rotted? what fucking jazz loop is that? Hard Normal? not alot of amen on that...loud raucus bad drumming is yer opinion..some people think Coltrane was detestable.. and as for the NO Time correction comment--- umm who cares..it gets annoying listening to everything being "perfect time". you either dig some of his music or ya love every bit of it or ya dont care either way (with various shades of grey in there for good measure).

and dont call me or anyone else on this board son unless they are yer kid.

I cant really link to these loops, but you can hear them on like every dnb record.

Like I said, get Jungle Warfare, and you'll realise how many classic dnb loops he uses.

you dont have to trust me, but once you start filing through it you'll see.

And as far as liking bad drumming, take another listen my friend. there is some simply ridiculous shit in the middle of that album. I havent listened to it for a while, but I'll try and find time to pick out the tracks and times Im referring to.

I saw the mighty SP in ny last april and he rock't the place half way through the show he came round in front of his rig and I could not pass up the chance to slap him on the ankle and say what up
