Multiband Dynamic Effect- Level up your sound design

Post by 2beats » Mon Jun 06, 2011 3:44 pm

A new tool I have been using to create a much better mix and have found worlds of effects is the Multi Band Compressor.

The Multiband Dynamics Effect from Ableton is an effective processing that takes audio and separates it into 3 bands. This can be helpful to see what is happening in the three bands.

I have been using Multiband in an Audio Effect rack. Basicly take an effect rack with 3 chains that have a multiband in each. Then in each rack hit the [S] solo button on each band. That way you have 3 separate channels with just those frequency ranges.

What this means is you can have different effects on each unique band. That means putting a reverb in just the highs and keeping the bass clean, adding a chorus to the bass, and so on.

With this tip you can really start to dial in your effects on the frequencies you want.

If you liked this article I have more at http://subaqueousmusic.com/production-articles/Also as an (Aq) Membership I have a few effect racks I have created with the Multiband Dynamic for free download.

If you have any tips on the MB add a comment about it.

Thanks,

yes indeed this is a great little tool. I've actually created a device rack for mastering using only Ableton Live devices. it does a nice job at it though it does not compare to the commercial adversaries like Ozone, T-Racks, and of course waves.

I'll throw it up on my blog tonight for you guys to download later tonight. I'm still at work at the moment.

Interested to see it. Do you somehow use it to make a multiband compressor?

I mainly use it for effects and sound design. I noticed it does slightly color the sound and weakens it a bit, but it is a worthwhile way for effects.

What is your blog?

Yes you can and indeed that is what I'm using to create the multiband stereo imager. Here is the post as promised.

Feel free to ping me back if you have any comments or if you can make this better. I feel that this is an are which which there is little of using Ableton only devices. BTW my goal with this was to provide some tools to get a quick and dirty master without having to spend extra money on 3rd party plugs.
