AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
I'm on the look out for new, preferably free, anti virus software after spending a few hours working out that AVG is behind most of my performance problems with Live.
I'm thinking of trying AVAST. Anybody tried it?
Any other suggestions
Please don't say "get a mac". I'm on a limited budget and need to get the most form my existing set up.

Have been using Microsoft Security Essentials since its inception. Small footprint, no problems.

I used to use AVG but found it a bit of a CPU hog. I'm using Avast now which has a Silent/gaming mode that seems to do the trick, although we should probably just disconnect from the net altogether & turn all anti virus/firewall programs of when making music

Thanks will check it out.jimstrider wrote:Have been using Microsoft Security Essentials since its inception. Small footprint, no problems.

Just took the first step and removed AVG from my machine.
It's like a lead weight has been removed ! No more unnecessary processes constantly thrashing the swap file and totally killing disk throughput.

That does sound like a good feature.Peevy wrote:I used to use AVG but found it a bit of a CPU hog. I'm tempted to manage without to be honest. The only time I ever had a virus detected was about 15 years ago by Mcaffee which proceeded to trash my system trying to clean it up, requiring a total system rebuild.
I don't install dodgy software, or visit dodgy web sites, I use a script blocker plus various malware blockers and scanners and connect via hardware router with a built in firewall.
But dare I risk it?

Been using ESET for ages now on PC and recently on OSX as well. Seems very low impact.
Nothing to see here - move along!

don't do enough surfing on random sites to need anything more.
Re: AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
I'm going to try the Microsoft Security Essentials for now.
Will check out info on ESET as well as Avast, never heard of it before. It's good to have other options in case of problems with MS option.
I also removed the Raport security software that my bank gave me, which had the same problems as most of AVGs services. constantly waking up and wanting their stuff back from the swap file, which immediately gets swapped out again because Live is using most of the physical memory.
Still have to let Security essentials scan the machine before I can see how it performs compared to AVG - it can't be any worse.

I run MSE with SpybotSD and don't even know they're there unless they're barking at me about some shitty cookie that a site is trying to install.

Re: AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
nod32 here as well.. its tiny & super efficient
Re: AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
Nod 32 here, but Windows Security Essentials on other machines works and it's tiny.
Live 9 Suite, audio trackles (several audio tracks that crackle)

Re: AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
Thanks for the advice guys.
I'm going to get used to MSSE for a while but I might try Nod32 to see how it compares.
I still seem to have some problems on my machine though. the whole thing just seems to stop dead for 10 to 15 seconds every now and again, and then it just picks up from where it left off as though nothing happened.
But ditching AVG as cured all the disk overload problems I was getting with large, memory hungry Live sets.

Re: AVG is killing my system, which AV is best with audio ?
I have none as I've got a mac! I also have everything backed up for when we all get shafted because a mac virus turns up and spreads like wildfire because no mac users have AV!
Might try MSSE on my windows partition though for everything else if it's supposed to be good and light on system resources. Thanks...
