Sound fonts or wav for sample library?

Post by icedsushi » Sun Jun 12, 2011 6:53 am

I have a sample collection Plasticlicks by d16, it comes with both WAV & sound font. Each sound font refers to 4 samples, a different sample for each velocity.

Live is pretty much my main music app. Should I just use the WAV & trash the sound font?

It looks like the only way to use the sound font is import them into Sampler one at a time, and it will make a copy to the Live library as an .adv file in the Imports folder. However it looks like the individual waveforms aren't visible apart from the .adv when you do this. So I'm wondering how useful are the sound fonts with Live if you already have the WAV?

I think soundfonts have wavs or uncompressed audio imbedded so I can't imagine there would be any difference in sound quality. I'm not really concerned about that.

I'm mostly curious how useful soundfonts are with Live for something like this. It's nice that Sampler groups them together with their velocities already mapped. But I guess you'd need to make your own racks & build them into kits to make it really useful. And then the samples would all be stored in the Live library, how practical it would be to access them with other applications?

As you can see, I'm new to soundfonts so I'm just trying to figure out it's worth the time & preparation to import all this stuff to the Live library or just use the wavs.
