Need help w/ Vocal/Recording/processing

Ya. I've been experimenting w/ mic positioning. I live in an apt. and the room I record in isn't the best. I made a little isolation room for vocals out of mattresses and blankets. I also use a popscreen I made out of a coat hanger and some panty hose. (super ghetto I know : ( )
Things are starting to sound better already. I'm still using the SM58 as I don't have $$ atm to buy a large diaphragm condenser. I've also started using a compressor while recording. What do you guys think about recording w/ compressor.

recording with a (software) compressor won't hurt anything unless you route it to compress the incoming signal. as far a just throwing one on a track goes (with no routing adjustments) it will only add volume to your output... i.e. make it easier for you to hear yourself in the headphones. if it helps you record... do it!

You know, an audio example of this perceived problem might not be a bad idea. Just throwing a (as in any) condenser mic at the issue may not be the solution. In fact it could create another set of issue all together. However, if you could provide a small 15-30 second clip then maybe some of the folks here could give you more focused answers.

you'll get different answers regarding compressing on the way in.. If you know what your doing, go ahead.. The mixing instructor I had at school always compresses on the way in.. of course he has a full studio and years of experience.. if you don't, it's probably better not to cuz you can't undo it.. just get the levels right and make sure there's no clipping while trying to get the hottest signal.. record at 24bit and you should have plenty of headroom.
