MIDI interface and mixer

I am replacing my old firewire interface which handled analog inputs (XLR/TRS) as well as MIDI.

I am looking to get an affordable desktop mixer - something like this:

Then I will need a separate MIDI interface to get my MIDI signal into the signal chain and into Live, something like this:

What is not clear to me is how the mixer will handle the MIDI? The mixer output gets to Live via my PC's USB port; how does the MIDI signal get into the mixer?

It doesn't get into the mixer. If you look at the back of the MIDIsport it also has a USB output. MIDI isn't actual sound, its simply just information. The information is passed from your midi controller (or midi device) and then transported via USB into Ableton or whatever program you use. It is then fed into whichever instrument you are using (piano sound, drum sound, whatever) and it translates it into a sound that you can then mix in Ableton or another audio program.

I personally would look for an "all in one" type of setup (Audio/ MIDI interface), but this setup should work fine.

Thanks Mark. I am looking at several all-in-one options. This Akai is my favorite (features-to-cost, aluminum housing) but it is not available yet!

Are there technical advantages to this type of setup - low latency, audio quality?

I wonder if anyone has a preferred control surface for mixing in Ableton - mind, I am not looking for performance capabilities so much (triggering clips and so on) just looking to adjust track volumes with a fader instead of a mouse.

I wouldn't say there is a difference between an Audio interface and an Audio/ MIDI interface...the only real difference is that one has both features built in.

Your original setup would be fine, but personally I just prefer everything together (I'm a sucker like that). If it means getting better quality mic pre's then go with that! Always quality over quantity!

....after trying many things, i found my final solution for the stage.....
A mackie onyx 820i as mixer and interface and an akai mpd 32 as controler and midi interface....

Thats 700 bucks all in all, but hey, thats forever.....
