How many of you use VST's?

Or should I ask this "does anyone not use vst's?"

I have been making beats for about 5 years, Mainly sample based hip hop/downtempo type stuff. For that time I've relied on samples for most of my sounds and I would tweak the instruments in ableton/my own samples by layering multiple effect over each one. I'm starting to think I am just shooting my self in the foot by not using any VST's.

Anyone have any suggestions for some good VST's. I'm liking the soniccouture sounds. Any effect suggestions?

Or are they really not necessary?

vsts are as necessary as your individual use for them, so what do you feel you are currently missing? a good bass module? a better sampler? something for lead sounds? because you don't just get a vst because you feel like you need to use vsts.

I mostly use;
2C-Aether (excellent reverb)
OtiumFX Sonitex

I use others but less often. (fabfilters, camelphat3...)

But you miss a lot by not using VST instruments...

if you mean vst instruments i'm in the phase of not using them anymore, find them to clean when mixing and always need to reamp or just abuse them a little bit, i like hardware a lot, the more limited the better.

Its up to you. I personally prefer VST's to manipulating samples, and I'm sure my style of music reflects that. Maybe the music you write works better the way your doing it (if you don't notice a definite lack of VST than it probably does).

Why not using VSTs? Its the best & only way to extend Live...

I own NI Komplete and will never miss it. Bootsy Plugs, TAL, Synth1, Oatmeal & some KVR Challenge things are really cool.

you speak well! at the first time i use & try out nearly every vst/dx/standalone application and distilled my own toolset. With Live you got a very easy-to-use tool, a must have is Sampler.

It really depends on your budget and what you need.

If you need some basses then Spectrasonics Trillian is probably the best bass module available.

For ultimate sound madness (huge sample libraries, romplers, tons of synths, presets etc.) the biggest guys are : Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Native Instruments Komplete, ReFx Nexus

If you like "deep" synths (in terms if having tons of knobs you can tweak ): Camel Audio Alchemy, U-He Zebra

Other specialised synths:
- Synapse Dune - it's the Sylenth 2.0 - favourite synth for "modern electronic" music
- Lennar Digital Sylenth - favourite vsti of trance music producers, 2-3 years ago
- Native Instruments Massive - favourite toy of all kind of Dubstep producers (very nice LFO shaping possibilities, great for all kind of wobble basses etc.)
- Korg M1 / Wavestation - great, bargain synths with few thousand bread & butter presets giving that 80s, early 90s flavour
- Waldorf Largo - great synth that produces specific sound: you love it or hate it
- XILS-lab PolyKb2 - warm sounding, VA, analogue synth
- Poise Drum Sampler - great Akai MPC Style drum sampler
- Native Instruments FM8 - if you're into FM Synthesis, Yamaha DX7 and all kind of 80s sounds such as digital bells, pianos etc.
