Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Hello, everyone!
I am hoping someone will save the day. I have tried all kinds of solutions, but each time I try to install, the Live installation stalls at the vcredist_x86.exe file, so I cannot install. I have been emailing support all week, but the suggestions have not gotten me anywhere.
Has anyone else encountered a similar problem or know of a solution? I have been struggling with this all week...
Thanks for the help.
Joel

Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
This is something of a long shot, but I have found that sometimes installing vcredist_86.exe hangs when the IIS Admin service is running, and stopping that service before installation enables the installation to complete.
Here's how to do that.
Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage." That pops up a window labeled "Computer Management." In the left pane of that window, open the tab marked "Services and Applications." When you've done so, you'll see a line marked "Services" with an icon to its left that looks like a tiny pair of gears. Select that. At the bottom of the window are a pair of tabs marked "Extended" and "Standard." Select the "Extended" tab if it is not already selected.
In the right pane is now a list of services in alphabetical order. Scroll down until you see "IIS Admin." If its status is "Started," then you might try stopping it, as follows: Click the line saying "IIS Admin." To the left now appears a little menu allowing you to stop, pause, or restart the service.
Select "Stop," then try installing again. When you're done, you can select "Start" to restart the service.

Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Thanks so much for the help. It's a crazy problem.
It seems to stall rather than freeze. I've let it go for a long time (a few hours), but not a few days.
I have tried to install the vcredist_x86 file from Microsoft... should it prompt me? When I click on the exe, it seems to open up, but nothing else happens. I mean, it doesn't alert me or anything; it just seems to run. Seem odd, but I'm not sure.
I don't see IIS Admin running. Thanks for the extremely precise instructions. That is very kind of you. Should I be concerned if I don't see IIS?

Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Nope. Not every machine has it running by default, and it isn't even installed on some machines. However, I have found that when it is installed and running, it sometimes interferes with installing vcredist_86.jupebox wrote:I don't see IIS Admin running. Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Another thought: Are you running antivirus software? You might try turning it off during installation.
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Yeah, I tried turning off anti-virus. Good call (I often forge that), but so far, it hasn't helped.
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
I guess the next thing to try is to boot your machine in safe mode with networking (so Live can authorize) and see if you can install it that way.
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Another good idea, but no luck. It stalled again.
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
I need to be installing it in the x86 folder, right? That's what I've been doing, but just to make sure.
I tried the regular program files folder, but that didn't seem to make a difference. Another stall.
This is the strangest thing. I've never had a program do this...

Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Is there a log file somewhere that you might be able to find?
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Not that I know of. I checked the Ableton folder; would it be accessible anywhere else?
Does it matter what year of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable I use? I see 2005, 2008, 2010, etc.
I'll try uninstalling all of them... Okay, I did that, but didn't seem to help.

Yes it matters -- it has to match the year of the program that wants to use it.jupebox wrote:Does it matter what year of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable I use? I see 2005, 2008, 2010, etc.
You uninstalled successfully but can't install?
I wonder: If you go back into Computer Management and thence to Event Viewer and System, are there any obvious error messages?
Re: Installation Stalls at vcredist_x86.exe
Wow, I even re-installed Windows 7 (extreme, I know), but that didn't help.
I uninstalled by just deleting the Ableton folder. I think I did it the official way before, though.
Do you think letting it run all night (12+ hours) will really help? I've never heard of doing that before, but since it's stalling rather than freezing, I can probably try that.

Sorry, yeah, it is connected via wifi. It's decent speed -- about 500kbs via dsl.

I can install on a laptop but not the desktop.
I have the same error with both the disc and the download.
