I just got done messing around with a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I'll say this once again: The Android Experience is truly SHIT. Jebus. How the fuck anyone can think it's the bees knees is well beyond me. Christ. It's like a wretched version of Vista in mini form.

Here's what Android OS is, pure and simple: An alternative to iOS. Done. It's far from better, it's just something that ISN'T Apple. What a fucking shame that is.. I mean, if you're going to take the time to come up with an iOS alternative, why not set out to make it the most elegant fucking thing ever invented by man since the Barcelona Chair? Instead, it feels nothing but bloated.

My favorite part of testing the Galaxy? The fact that whenever you do ANYTHING, the drive engages so violently that the thing literally vibrates in your hand. User experience FTW.

From a music app perspective, it's a nightmare. You won't see good live instrument stuff like ThumbJam and MorphWiz on it for a long time, as the touch latency is still ridiculous. Apparently the audio APIs aren't anywhere near the same level as what Apple's provided either.

Personally, I think ThumbJam may be my favorite audio app ever. I can't put it down.

Hadn't played around with Android anything for a couple of months, but based on the UNABASHED GLOWING PRAISE that Android has been getting lately, I thought I'd give one another shot. Don't know if the unit I saw was Honeycomb or Earwax or Sandwich or whatever... I fucking can't keep track of them. All I know is that it sucked.

And you know you're in trouble when the whole music app graphics and whatnot are lifted right from iOS/iTunes.

I checked out some of the few demo videos on youtube and wasn't all that impressed. For one thing it doesn't have pads so you can tap in a beat on the fly.

And does it have a step sequencer where you can see all the notes in the pattern at once or is it just one sound at a time?

Everything you just said is EXACTLY what makes iOS so fucking great.

And it's not just the setup and hardware that's bad. It's Google's entire fucking approach. Keep it open and every dickhead manufacturer is going to load it up with SHIT. The entire approach is inherently FLAWED. Why else would they just announce a 'unified' version, lol.

Yeah, that's exactly what I want to do with my new Android tablet - spend a bunch of time cleaning it up and optimizing and God Knows what else. Most Android buyers won't know any better. What's the difference? Fools that buy Apple products at a premium, or fools that buy everything else but don't know the first thing about optimizing/securing and can't be arsed to learn?

Like I said.... Android = Vista Mini.

in regards to the phone portion of this conversation;

my girlfriend got a Samsung Infuze 4G bells whistles blah phone last Saturday. i've setup an Anroid OS phone at work (with Exchange mail) and people sit around spouting off about them from time to time, but i never have really sat down and had a good solid exploration of one. i realize most of you guys really like Apple products, but WTF are you talking about? That thing is awesome and it doesn't even take a jukebox to run it. in fact, its USB cable has still never seen the female receptor of a PC and "it just works".

the day before that (last Friday) i got called away from my regular duties to install iTunes (on a work PC despite policies against it) because one of our doctor's just got the iPhone 4... and can't activate it without first installing iTunes. Puhleeeeease. the drama around just turning the phone portion on is too much to type.

i can understand personal preference, but there is nothing wrong with that phone (Samsung) or the OS installed on it. i'm not saying that there is anything wrong with an iPhone (after it's activated), but i am saying (again) there is nothing wrong with the Android OS that i can see other than the fact that Lookout doesn't come pre-installed you actually have to download it from the WELL STOCKED app store.

Again though, it's not that Android is bad, it's that the hardware and default set ups are bad. It's just like buying a cheap Gateway or e-machine computer - Windows will run horrible at start, but once you clean up the system, get rid of all the junkware, and maybe add a stick of ram, it runs great (or at least well).

Most of the Android phones coming out now are full of a thousand widgets and apps running in the background at start. I have a first generation Droid and I love it - it runs fast, has great battery life, etc...my friend got a Droid 2 and it was full of widgets and apps (a lot of which was spamware that you weren't allowed to get rid of) and because of that it crawled and had HORRIBLE battery life. I cleaned up the phone for him and now he has no problems with it.

So don't knock the OS (which is a very stable, fast, Linux-based OS), knock the hardware people and service providers who fill their phones with "custom" versions of the OS (like HTC does, to much fail) and horrible widgets and apps.

The problem with some people who really know what they’re doing with Windows and Android OS is they seem to discount the huge user base of people who don’t know what they’re doing and gum things up pretty quickly between hardware manufacture’s proprietary software and downloading and installing anything that catches their fancy. I’m not saying you are doing that. You seem to be pretty level headed about it all. But the hardcore Windows fanboys can’t even seem to acknowledge that there’s a lot of people who don’t know what they’re doing…or even want to take the time to know what they’re doing.

How many distinct version of the Android OS are there? For phones and tablets? I saw a webpage awhile back and now I can't find it..but I lost count at like 12 different versions; which largely has to do with manufacturers loading their own shell or whatnots.

I can install iTunes on any computer and get any iDevice up and running in mere minutes.

Fact:
IT guys - many of whom can install and maintain ENORMOUSLY complicated server and render farms etc. cannot seem to fucking get anything going with Apple products in under 4 hours.
