How to map something to multiple knobs/pads?

Post by perplex » Wed Jun 29, 2011 1:07 pm

I want to map the sync rate of my LFO to a couple of pads.
One pad being 1/8, one pad being 1/16t, etc etc

How do I do this?

AFAIK it cannot be done in Ableton.

There are 2 options, both of which I use from time to time.

1: If possible, set the pads to the same CC\Channel number and set the outgoing data level to the right level for the function needed. This is difficult on many devices as they are not that flexible.

2: The most flexible and easy way is to use software such as Bome MIDI Translator which can take any MIDI input and rout to any MIDI output. This would allow you to easily set multiple inputs from multiple devices and controls to a single output. You can even design rules which is really useful.

I cannot recommend Bome enough for anyone that has more than 2 controllers or needs the flexibility that DAWs don't provide.

example with Operator's lfo:

- in session view create a midi clip on the operator track
- set its lfo to sync mode, rate 1/48 (the highest)
- right-click the 'rate' knob > 'show modulation'

now you see the rate mod data. it can be set from 0 (rate 1/48) to +14 (rate 4).
just click-drag that line to the corresponding rate you want.
duplicate clip and set to a new rate. repeat. once you have the desired lfo rates in each clip, midi-map them to your pads.

I agree with Option 1.

Another way that is kind of quick, but takes away use of the keyboard on one of your MIDI Channels (or a ridiculously high or low range that you'd never use), is to assign the rate to a macro knob in a Rack, and then assign the macro knob to a range of keys. Actually, if it is on the same channel as your bass, you can play bass w/ your left hand, and 'rate' with your right :D
