Automation, "Return to Arrangement", and Playing Clips

I constructed an automation procedure, which worked fine the first time I put it together. When I reloaded my work, the automation had "greyed out". I selected return to arrangement, and the automation boxes were pink again. But when I return to arrangement, all of my clips become "greyed out". If I try to make the play box on the clip green, thus play it back, the automation greys out again. So it's back and forth, either the automation is grey or the clip is.

If anyone can help with a solution, I'd be very grateful.

I'm just crawling out from the water in session view myself, but tracks will be mutually exclusive in arrangement and session. Firing a clip in session that lives on a corresponding track where your automation lane lives will override that automation. Anything that goes grey is due to being offline (if I'm not mistaken) or in your case taken over.

You'd have to work on a different track in session. And if you're firing master scenes, you'll want to make sure to take the Stop button off for the corresponding clip slot on the track that holds your arrangement automation. Yes, you can still view session while the arrangement is playing: you'll see that the back to arrangement button is not engaged-that might have been confusing.

I'm not familiar with a lot of the terminology. How can I get the individual clips to play via arrangement?

In the session view, drag the clip onto the arrangement button (don't release yet), that should enter the arrangement view and you can drop the clip on the corresponding track anywhere on the timeline.
I'm sure copy/paste also works.
