question about resampling and volume reduction

Post by herathe » Thu Jun 23, 2011 2:51 pm

hey guys,

i have a feeling its just me missing out on something fundamental but perhaps you can help me with something.

when i have a track of audio, and i want to resample it onto another track, i change the input of the second track to be the first track.

i arm it to record and press play so the audio output from track one ends up on track two.

however,

the newly recorded audio always seems to be lower in volume than the first. what is going on here??

...default on most daws is a lower level transfer because of adding and summing up tracks....otherwise you would blow your master all over with every new track joining your mix....
If you want a one to one copy you have to render that track...and import the resulting file...

Also, check the amp/volume in the midi sample instrument or clip's sample box you're loading the resampled audio into. They typically don't always (ever?) to 0dB, rather something like -12dB.

I disagree with this, that's a notion that Live just lowers volume levels at arbitrary amounts. he probably has the source track's volume too low.

also disagree with this. tracks themselves have TONS of headroom, over 60dB to play with. if you're talking about the Master track then yes, don't go into red, keep things a few dB below 0.

Whoops, I think you're actually disagreeing with a typo. "the don't always" was intended to be "they don't always", not "then don't always".
