UltraNova can't control Live Intro using knobs

Post by seenfromspace » Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:39 pm

  • Mac OSX 10.5.5
    Live Intro 8.2.1
    Novation Ultranova
Ultranova is only partially talking to Live Intro. I can map Ultranova keys to functions in Live but not the rotary encoder knobs. Carefully following instructions in built-in lessons!

In Live preferences, Ultranova is not listed as a control surface. I know it's a very new product, but in the Novation manual for setting up Live, it has a screen shot that shows Ultranova in the list. Ultranova is listed in the Input and Output boxes, and I have it selected in both of these.

And I'm getting nowhere with Automap :!:

Thanks All.

Hi, have you tried using Ultranova without Automap? Enable "track" and "remote" for the input from it, under Preferences->MIDI. Then enter MIDI mapping mode and map it.

@Ableton_David - yes, tried it with and without Automap. Followed instructions from Novation's guide to setting up Live, followed Live's built in lessons, downloaded Live 8.2.2b1 OS X. Ultranova is still not listed as a Control Surface in Live prefs.

Sorry, let me clarify - there isn't currently a Control Surface for the Ultranova. You'll need to manually connect it via MIDI. Under Preferences->MIDI, you should see it listed for MIDI input and output. Enable "track" and "remote" for MIDI input and you'll be able to map it manually.

@Ableton_David - I've done all that already. I can manually map Ultranova keys to functions in Live (they're immediately listed in the mapping panel) but not the knobs. Sometimes when I turn a knob, the MIDI indicator flashes and sometimes it doesn't - haven't worked out what these respective conditions are.

Novation support have also been trying to help, but I've already done everything they advise. In their instructional PDF there's a screenshot of the 'Control Surface' drop-box in Live preferences and Ultranova is listed there. In my copy of Live Intro, no Novation products are listed!

Are you able to say when a control surface will be available for Ultranova? The last thing I want is to have to buy another hardware controller - the whole point of this was to have a keyboard, laptop, one USB cable and one mains lead!

Thanks again for any help you can give.

Just wanted to say I'm also having this problem. Live seems to be receiving midi info from the knob and even allows me to link a knob to a parameter but doesn't control the parameter once I exit midi map mode.

I had better luck after I reinstalled Automap. The order in which you install Automap and Live seems to make a difference. Can't remember now but I think it's Live first, then Automap.
