Drum Rack problem with mpd control surface setting

So I understand that the drum rack is supposed to adapt its note routing based off your selection of control surface in the preferences (and where the note matrix window is). My problem is that I don't want this but need to have my mpd32 selected as a control surface for other parameters. All I want is to be able to play up the grid chromatically through 4 banks on the mpd but the rack keeps changing where the notes go. When the mpd isn't selected as a control surface it works just fine but thats not really an option for me. Any ideas?
