saving my own stuff in the library - odd results

sorry for the 4th question in one night

saving my own stuff in the library - i'm getting odd results

how am i supposed to do it

i drag can drag in
Audio clips
Midi Clips
the Track Title bar

(can i drag anything else?)


audio clips seem ok - but i have to click preview every time to preview them? Why? because it's some sort of file with settings i'm guessing? white folder in the explorer with extra files


when i drag the track title bar it saves as a live set? and i have to explore it to preview the sounds. or if i double-click it, it instantly loads a whole new project. (if i have saved my project or it offers to ' save before close if i haven't saved because it's trying to load what i clicked on)

also if i drag multiple clips it saves as a 'live set' black folder

I thought i was supposed to use this space to collect ideas . samples sets of samples. midi . synth midi presets playing parts. but am i getting it all wrong.

does anyone use this as a way of collecting cool ideas together?

any tips welcome

also there is a samples folder in the library called "samples/imported"

is this all the samples for anything i have dragged into the library?

don't do that.

Live has a few paradigms to it that we have to get used to. one is that you can't save a set within a set. I don't know exactly what will happen but in my years that's what I've learned. the Library is a Live set in itself, so saving a set in the Library is saving a set within a set.

personally I don't touch the Library, I let Live do ALL the manipulations in it. I have a separate directory c:/My Ableton/ where I save all my Live sets, Self Contained. I have another directory c:/My Samples/ for my samples, and so on.

i'm left with more questions about the live library

i had a little browser through the live library because after all it took ages to install
it just made angry
loads of presets load with a "YOU NEED TO UPGRADE" error message . OK cool thanks ableton ...just leave those out for now FFS
and lots of pointless other chaff
i was rally disappointed
i kind of have my own samples that load without error messages

so apart for a few 'not that good presets for the FX is the library much use at all

Q1 is there a difference saving to the library or saving to 'just any folder'?
Q2 what is the fast way to save 'just the sample' or 'just the midi' or 'just the clip'?
Q3 also If i delete the useless parts of the library will they just install again with every library upgrade?

totally pants. 'pants' that's a funny saying, can't imagine the origin. this is why I call the File Management System the File Manglement System. I get along with it but I try to not piss it off.

with the 'upgrade' warnings I learn to just avoid those presets but I have most of the instruments.

1 - the Library is a Live set, so it's not just saving it to a folder, it's saving it to a folder that has some underlying structure to it. as I wrote above, I don't save it there because I don't want to piss off Live and spend a few afternoons wrestling with it. I treat the Library like a special place for Ableton to set siht up on my computer and I leave it alone. I make my own folders, as I posted about earlier.

2 - good old drag and drop into the Live browser, just not into the Library.

3 - me thinks yes but I've never tested it so I might be wrong, doubt it. drive space is cheap, I don't trip on saving disc space, I eat it up as fast as possible and buy new drives about once a year.

so i have saved 'clips' and 'sets' in a project folder called 'live library'

i get it........... so best to save elsewhere

so if i am to save 'just an audio file' so it previews fast without having to click preview, how do i do that?

i assume the preview button is because the 'live library' is a project folder.

i read the manual cover to cover, maybe some of this stuff didn't stick the first time. i might have a nother browse

as for tidying up the live library it was more to do with finding any good stuff fast, but i might just leave it all be for now

preview - honestly, I just poke around with the damn thing. sometimes I forget to hit the headphone button or some other setting but I don't use preview very much. I mostly play with drum loops and drum sets that I like in a pre-made set, I get something going then grab bass or guitar and add a few layers then finish with some synth touches. honestly, for a long time now the only thing I use in the Library are presets for Electric. I make my own Operator presets on a per project basis.

as for finding stuff quickly, dunno. with all this maybe you should keep the Library in its stock condition then copy it to a new location and point Live to second location. then go to town on tweaking out the copy of the Library. seems like you're new to Live, maybe this is just a learning curve thing, you'll learn the Library, where to go, where to avoid.

to summarise

I can drag and save a clip
this saves the sample and settings but creates a project to do it
the actual sample is saved .......in a folder .......in a folder .........in a folder (for easy access)
i drag a clip - it creates a project - puts the sample in a folder called samples/imported




how it looks in live

MIDI clip is not so bad it only creates one folder

i can also drag the devices and racks but only LIVEs

I can select a file and export as MIDI - again pretty easy




Export audio is more of a MIXDOWN kind of option

here's my scenario

I jamming a project i have a few sounds i like
I want to save them off as WAV or REX (just the files not loads of folders and stuff)
so i can import them into anything that used audio
or preview them in LIVE having auto preview (ie not having to click the right arrow everytime to preview)

Can i copy a file out of live as fast i put it in

the only way i have found is

click the filename



to locate it in the live browser and copy and paste it manually

then drag it out holding ALT to copy it to a new location
