@glitchrock-buddha,
exactly what other synth offers the kind of complex envelopes that Absynth does?
May not be your cup of tea, but it's an absolutely unique approach, and personally I'm happy at least one synth allows you to use envelopes like complex track automation LFOs. Would feel odd if every soft synth stuck to the VA synth approach.

yes...exactly...
it's a completely "outside the box" approach to constructing a synth
making it excellent even for drones and complex pads..
it's simply stuff you can't do with any other tool..
(clip envelopes/automation are cool but don't offer many of the features Absynths' envelopes do..)
the spectral and morph sections are also a unique approach..

Yep! Most of our shows are actually at the FEZ ballroom, but we've played elsewhere like Hawthorne, Plan B, and some Seattle shows. Looking to expand / play more, too...and indeed, Portland represent

I don't really use the sequencing envelope features, just having a breakpoint assignable on every single parameter is fine enough.

You'll love it for years to come. In fact I just finished a track with six instances of Absynth and was really pleased on the diverse sounds I had on tap.

Sure, the GUI always was a clumsy affair, which dates back to its pre-NI days, but once you find your way around it (there are a few really good YouTube tutorials and of course the manual isn't that hard to grasp either) it's not THAT bad.

The automation issue can be a bit of hassle, but then again, routing them to the right panel can bring up some clever planning beforehand, a bit like assigning 'only' eight macros

Absynth is pretty cool, though since getting Camel's Alchemy, I find myself going for that more and more, bit more intuitive interface IMHO.

Zebra, Omnisphere, RP Blue, Alchemy, FM8 to name a few. Though there are many more. Absynth has many more envelope features in that you can get many kinds of shapes, blocks etc. But most of those which aren't curves can be done with automation.

Ya, it's a fine feature, and sure it works well for long evolving sounds, but I'm just less of a fan of movement that is built right into the sound because you get the same modulation every time you play a note. I don't know if that makes sense, just how I see it now. And ADSR envelopes aren't necessarily a VA approach. You can get extremely complex results out of hybrid/digital type synths with only ADSR envelopes and lfo's. It's really the complex sound source section that allows complex sounds as long as the parameters are automatable.

there's ways around a 'fixed' modulation (regarding envelopes) in Absynth 5 :

you can create multiple envelopes modulating the same parameter. now why would someone want that?
imagine having one of those set to 'loop' (or whichever you choose) , and another set to 'control driven'.
the 'control driven' envelope sets the min and max range of modulation (and you can give it any curve you desire. macro controls don't allow you to do that.)
the other envelope just modulates the parameter the way you have set it up.
basically the same as the way clip envelopes work in live imo.

the wonderful thing about Absynth is that each individual envelope breakpoint's time and amp can be modulated with any macro, velocity , modwheel, aftertouch and an envelope lfo (with different speed and depth per envelope breakpoint) as well, you can also link any envelope breakpoint to any of the master adsr breakpoints : instant mega-modulation changes.

and let's not forget the "scale' , 'generate ar pulse' and other commands from the envelope windows drop-down menu. really powerful and fast.
plus each individual envelope breakpoint can be set to either 'slope' or 'step'. great for step-sequencing etc.
might take some time to set up, but you can save any envelope as a template for further use, as well as any module/channel/ fx (complete with envelopes/ macros/ etc).

i find myself using it standalone more and more because of the multiple screen that can be opened simultaneously. hit cmd+ one of the menu tabs (on Mac) and it'll open in a separate window. that really speeds up my workflow.

funny thing is, i can create anything i can image with it. not just pads or soundscapes (like a lot of people think it only excels at).
also beats and wavesequencing are possible with those 'sample jump' envelopes, and you can get very surprising results with that.
or use it as a (sort of) tube compressor when you set one of the master modules to a monophonic waveshaper, and modulate parameters with 'audio mod'.

gawd...i'll stop now......i get creative just thinking about it.....needless to say i LOVE Absynth....totally.
