Raw Groove / Chicago House / Techno House (not tech house!)

Post by TechnoLover » Sat Jul 09, 2011 9:04 am

Hello mates!

I am looking for some help in making some "raw groove" house/techno! (something like some chicago house or jackin' house) ...

Of course, any tips about the rythmic part and the patterns construction : hats and groove (such as the "duck effect" ) would be great! And, secondly, one of my main problems is more about "how to process" the drums than how to write the rythmic : I would like to know how to get their "dirty" kick (not a hardcore kick but something dirty/crispy) and all the other rythmic elements (they old sound "oldschool", dirty, crispy !)

I tried the vinyl distortion/saturation/overdrive but can't get them sounding good enough! (I use Ableton Live)

So, if you have any tips on how to process the drums (the kick is one of the most important part in it) and also on the construction, you would make my day :)

I also face big problems with the construction (patterns + processing) of the techno RIDE ...

Thank you so much for what you teached me, this community is awesome!

(some tracks of Samuel L Session, Steve Mac, DJ Sneak, ... can be good ! I think that the kick can be really similar to the "ghetto" house or booty techno kicks)

The perfect example for this kind of tracks is this set from Paul Mac : http://soundcloud.com/1000dragones/1000 ... c-stimulus

Thank you guys so much!

Hey,

I think the drums procession is not really the key to that sound. It's probably just some bus compressing and/or tube warming. (I'd use The Glue and PSP Vintage Warmer.)
The kick in the track you linked doesn't sound that special to me. I'd guess it was sampled from vinyl and processed, but you'd get similar results by layering a nice low kick with some mid and high "dirt" like a snare or a hihat. EQ & compress to taste.
To get that jackin' sound, the drum pattern is the most important part. You'll want to get it funky by staying of the grid with quiet a few notes, and add an extra hihat here and there to get out of that straight 1/8ths pattern. The snare/clap is pulled a few ms before the kick, to get a more driving feel.

Hope that helps you out a bit!

You might want to try a bitcrusher across some of your samples to give them that 'old sampler' sound.

Try 112DB Morgana, or D16 Decimort.

someone told me to use the D16 Decimort some weeks ago. I bought it but couldn't make anything great with it yet :(

play more around with it, its really nice. use the preamp on it to drive a sound hot. love this effect on drums and pads for a texture.
