Okay, okay. You've made me rethink my position so I went to Pandora and entered in some stuff again and was presented with a relatively decent selection of tunes.

So, I'm amending my statement to say:

"I usually despise all those music services because they give me heinous shit to listen to but last night Pandora was on it's best behaviour."

Good man.

Also check out the Slacker app. It kicks Pandora's butt but I don't remember why...too much crap on my mind over the last month or two. But do check it. I think for it's better features you had to pay some kind of subscription or something.

Here's what the Slacker subscriptions offer.

https://store.slacker.com/store/Subscri ... ite-header

Two things that stand out is you can play specific songs and even entire albums on demand and also you can store playlists with songs in your idevice so you can play even without an internet connection.

It's being widely reported that 33% of iPhone owners think the phone is 4G. This is undeniable proof that Apple is gaining market share and is spilling into the total mong demographic who have an AOL email address and make their purchasing decisions based on Walmart newspaper filler. :x

Funny story if you fellas got the time.

We got new computers at work with Windows 7 on them. Through tooling around they don't have Flash installed on them and, holy shit, navigating the web on a computer without Flash installed I've witnessed what people might be complaining about with no Flash on idevices. Nothing worth killing yourself over, but so many sites saying I need to install the Flash plug-in. Should be standard issue, I know, right? But I can't install anything because I'm not admin. The IT guy was cool enough but I felt I was verbally fumbling around to think of a "business purpose" I need Flash on my computer for. He couldn't give less of a shit about an explanation and installed it. In summary IT guy: "fully agree, but I'm paid to manage shit."

Flashback a week prior. Asked a coworker how uptight and monitored the company is about internet usage is. He said "Unless there's a known problem they aren't going to mess with you, but sometimes I stream Pandora and the IT guy gets on me" FUCK! the only reason I wanted Flash installed on my computer is because I wanted to stream Pandora. :x

I so don't get tech because we have a T1 line going to our building with exactly 5 computers hooked up to it. How the fuck could streaming Pandora be detected or bog down the system??? :x

Standards and practices? Pandora means streaming, which means bandwidth cost.
Tons of businesses still use IE6 for "security purposes because it's "standards and practices" which is ignorant imo. At this point I think it's laziness. I think using Flash and bandwidth means more vulnerability so they stick to those arcane practices.

Kudos to actually having a one on one sensible dialogue with IT, though.

For the most part, excuses from IT, or those who say they are answering for IT are bullshit. Really I think it's an excuse for businesses and IT to not have to upgrade, and the fear of it out of ignorance.

It's easier to stick to what they know than have to change things and deal with potential new problems.

Okay, err.

iOS5 wifi mirroring isn't going to solve the video restrictions with apps like HBO GO. HBO blocks any and all video signals from being sent out of the iPad; regardless of the method. It's legal mumbo jumbo, I'm sure. I've read where some people are able to get the HDMI cable to work with the iPad2, but only after fiddling a bit and even then it's not 100% successful every time.

Bottom line?

There's still plenty of room for jailbreaking. With jailbreaking, all mirroring restrictions are lifted.

I'm researching it again for my iPad1, but already there's like 4 different ways to jailbreak and nowhere do I fucking see a detailed pros and cons list for each method.

not streaming isn't bullshit. if you're streaming audio and video you are hogging bandwidth. IT says no because it can cause issues for other users in the company, like the kind of users that hire and fire people...

let me paint a picture for you about installing Flash; IT guy installs it on someone's computer. now twice a week when Flash needs yet another update IT gets calls from end users saying "every time i log in i get this popup that says that i need to update. it's so annoying". you can't install the update because if you could you could also install other things (non work related trash) that could harm your PC, but who is expected to fix it??

Why would IT want to run into that when the employees job requires email and access to non Flash applications and sites? Java is just as bad if not worse, to name names.

end users always think IT just wants to make their life miserable, but they're just giving their own cubicle too much damn credit. the reality is IT just want to keep their constant headache lifestyle under some form of control.

upgrades cause unforeseen problems almost every time. even a simple Windows update on a workstation can disable something that has worked for years. then you have to figure out which one did it or wait for Microsoft to update the update. you can call it bullshit all you want. it's the real deal. add to that the fact that companies generally cut IT staff and costs among the first in a crunch, but still expect the same turn around time for every issue... despite every other issue.

Less really is more.

Isn't it all about the culture of the company, really? Hardly any of our clients block anything off the net. The higher and more prestigious the firm, the more likely they are to simply trust their staff. If you're paying some accounting consultant $350,000 a year to start, chances are pretty good you aren't going to be too hot and bothered if they are streaming Pandora or not.... Seriously.

It's those clients I've had that are the 2nd and 3rd tier kinda firms - your run of the mill insurance companies and whatnot - where management gets their panties all in a bunch. The average worker is getting paid $50,000 a year to work, goddamnit, not fart around on the interwebs. :x :x :x :x

At the end of the day, this is really little more than Class Warfare. I see little in the workforce to prove otherwise. The lower down you are, the more you're watched over and restricted. The more fucking money you make and the better the company, the more likely they are to trust the employees.

Nothing is blocked with the company I work for, and I've never heard of any sort of abuse or disciplinary action. Flash builds and Java versions and whatnot are never really an issue. To H2's point, what our IT group does do is hold on to a stable version of ANYTHING until it's practially worthless. That's a smart move, and pretty common throughout the US workforce.

H2O If you read again what I wrote but take out the 3rd part "For the most part...ignorance" we're agreeing on the same thing. You reiterating in more detail what I wrote.
On the 1st line I said streaming means bandwidth cost.

With the 3rd part I wrote, well I don't know what I was thinking except I was somewhat drunk and ready to go to bed but I was wrong.

You're right.

I understand IE6 is still used because of less vulnerability (and lighter for these older comps)
and how much a pita it would be to have Flash.

But guess what, more often IT gets called up because things have gotten out of date we can't reach places we need to because ie6 isn't supported. Plus they've made such a mess of having so many different databases and needing passwords for all of them and passwords for passwords I think IT has to work more to keep these old systems running. It's a headache for everyone.

this. This. THIS.

It's a fucking PLAGUE.

I can't tell you how many instances we have of password protection within password protection within password protection. ffs. It's not state secrets. It's usually something mundane like some manual or brochure repository. It's a simple case of they lost track ages ago for this stuff and are too short staffed and overworked to actually have the time to go back and streamline that shit. Truth.
