So, question about my Korg PadKontrol and Drum/Instr Racks

Post by ResonanceMan » Thu Jul 14, 2011 3:16 pm

So, my Korg PadKontrol allows 16 drum pads for each "scene" which there are 16 of them.
But my drum sample libraries I have loaded go beyond that by far...
Is there a way to easily make use of the other samples I have loaded with Drum Racks/ Instrument Racks?
I can only store 16 scenes right now, and it would be great if I could access more sounds without having to program the notes in the PadKontrol every time I wanna use other sounds...

I'm not sure how gracefully this addresses your problem, but you might be able to use some the MIDI effects bundled with Ableton to transform the notes coming from your PadKontrol to whatever notes you need.

However, if you have 16 pads on each of 16 "scenes" each sending a note, you've got 256 notes... which is twice as many as you can even have on a given MIDI channel (MIDI notes are numbered 0 to 127). That's a TON of notes. Is there some sample library where you really need more than that?

yes. I run Kontakt with 16 parts. Each one has anywhere from 60-127 notes. Massive drum banks.. I also tried running a "Network Session" from one computer to the other by using instrument racks loaded with 16 external instrument devices, each one sending over the network session to the other computer on individual channels, but I can't seem to keep the channels seperated... Not sure why.. This is also the same problem internally on one computer.

It would be nice if Ableton had some sort of way to assist the drum pad to make more sounds accessible.. There's gotta be a solution out there somewhere...

I would also suggest use of the pitch midi FX.

Perhaps you could use the different MIDI channels? Load drum banks onto other tracks and filter their MIDI inputs by channel?

I know this requires having another instance of Kontakt for each channel which probably has some overhead, but if you're loading that many drum sounds simultaneously to be played back realtime I presume you've got power to burn. :)

It seems that with so many sounds, he has to load several instances anyway, so that would just mean changing the channel on each one...
