Unfortunately, I'm not at Sonar, but I was just too busy to reply (working on another APC-patch that soon will be released...)

It's quite complicated what you are trying to do, but it's possible.

As far as I can see, you need to make some changes to the following 3 subpatchers:

- "p quantize_velocity" (Location: "Load notes from current selected clip into cellblock" > "p filter_clip_notes"): Here, the current implementation just translates all velocity values that are below 100 into a 1 (= value to set a green LED on the APC) and every velocity above 100 into a 3 (= value to set a red LED). In your case, I would replace everything between the in- and out-objects with coll-object that contains a list of all velocity values of 0-127 and the corresponding LED values of the APC). (TIP: Use Excel to create large lists of coll-entries)

- "p prepare_clip_replacement_call" (Location: "Update the Midi-Clip" > "p update_clip_notes"): Between the "unpack/pack 0 0 0 0 0"-objects, the LED-values get translated back into velocity values. Here, just use again a coll-object, but this time with LED-values as the index.

- "Translate button presses into notes" (Location: Main patcher): everything below the jit.matrix-object implements the functionality of setting notes with different LED-values. Just expand it by adding some kind of routing logic that observers the button presses of the 5th-row.

Assignable Knobs patch.

For example, when you push a Track Selection button the Track Control Knobs, control a device you tell it too, AND the Device Control Knobs blue hand what you tell it to i.e.

Usually in a Live set I will have more than 2 device racks on a track, but there will only be 2 that I always want to control during a performance.

I have a device that has a menu system where you can assign what rack gets the blue hand and what rack gets the Track Control Knobs when choosing a track with the Track Selection Knobs. However, the Track Control knobs are MIDI MAPPED and I am just banging out parameter ID's when Track Selection buttons are pressed. So the Track Control Knobs dont have the full ring LED's or the Bi Polar LEDS. Having the Track Control Knobs acting as a secondary Device Control with proper LED feedback would be awesome.

Not sure about what the Track Control buttons should do. I was thinking something like PAN would reset the device, SEND A would be a momentary button, when pushed, turned up send A on the selected track. Same with SEND B, and maybe SEND C. Good for dub style delays and reverbs.

Anyways that what I would like to see. I'm really interested in how to access Track Control Knobs properly.

You almost got it. But in the "prepare_clip_placement_call" you don't need to listen to the button presses, but just translate the internal LED-values back into velocity values. Something like this:

However, I just realized that you plan to use the same color and thus the same internal LED values for different velocity-values, which will be a problem when you try to translate back from LED to velocity values, since there are only 6 LED-colors (including the blinking ones).

You could try a workaround by extending your coll-objects with additional internal LED-values greater then 6 and translate them into values the APC understands right before you send the calls to the APC, which is right between "r ---Update_Button_Matrix" and the outlet of "p update_button_matrix_led" (Location "Initializes the patch and properly turns it on/off" > "p initialization").

In hindsight, translating the velocity values into internal LED-values was a bad design decision. Instead, I should have worked with the real velocity values and translate them in to APC-LED-Format right before the calls are sent into the APC. If I'll ever release a v2 of the Step-Seq, I will try to fix this.

I'm not sure I understand this very well. After work I will try to see if I can create a work around. Although I understand about half of your patch really well, it's the other half that confuses me. Your patching work is top notch, but it's still hard to figure out someone else's logic on such a complex device. And I've only been learning M4L a little bit at a time since it came out.

I really like this patch and have learned alot about patching as a result of all this. I was using Hanz Pertov's script until you posted your patch. In his script, setting velocity is great and I just want that feature. Hanz's script is fantastic, but after using it A LOT, I realized I like the layout of your's much better. I could see right away that the 5th row of matrix buttons could be used for velocity.

When it comes to LED feedback values I was thinging of something like this
Velocity 1-16, GREEN
Velocity 17-32, GREEN
Velocity 33-48, GREEN
Velocity 49-64, YELLOW
Velocity 65-80, YELLOW
Velocity 81-96, YELLOW
Velocity 97-112, RED
Velocity 113-127, RED

No blinking LED's, thats to much flashy lights when trying to sequence a beat.


So considering thats the LED feedback I want, I will see if I can figure out the workaround.

So this is really tricky. I am at a loss with trying to add velocity features. Seem's like all my efforts break functionality elsewhere. For example, I can get velocity values to the notes, but not notes individually, it wants to change all the notes. Sometimes, I feel like I get things working, and then when I close the patch from editing it quits doing what I thought I had working.

Maybe I am confused on the path things are taking, or better yet WHEN things are taking place. In what order do things take place?

When the patch is active i.e the track it sits on is selected, what happens in what order with the velocity values?

OK so I have been thinking this one over for a bit before trying to take another stab at re-working Mark's sequencer patch to add velocity.

I have come to the conclusion that it would be fantastic to choose velocity per note using all the knobs on the APC40. Old school hardware sequencer style. Just like there is the "running light" on the matrix, if it could be patched where the ringed encoders "running light" were full rings and otherwise, the single line.

So as the matrix running light progresses, the encoder rings follow, and the encoder could dial in velocity as opposed to choosing velocity with buttons, and a bunch of pushing buttons on and off to get desired velocity values.

I have never had such a complex idea for a patch, nor have I built my own step sequencer, but I feel like Mark's ideas are a great place to start, but it will take a lot more patching and a reworking of how velocity is handled.

Quick question on this sequencer. Can u expand the 32 step sequence using more banks or does it only operate as a 32 step loop? So basically to have additional 32 step sequences that have variations of the arrangement of the loop.
