Where/How to find stems of indie band songs for remixing?

Post by msodrew » Tue Jul 19, 2011 1:02 am

Does anyone know where to source stems (the isolated vocal, drums, keys, guitar, etc) of a particular song, specifically from mid-level popularity indie bands? I'd love to get the clean vocal track for some songs for remix project purposes but cannot find a single source on the internet that has this type of material.

I know bands (usually huge ones) host remix competitions sometimes, but I'm more interested in the mid-level popularity saturation bunch... the band in I want is called Hooray for Earth.

Anyone had an experience getting ahold of some good stems? I know some bands would not mind sending out the clean vocal track for a song, but they are prohibited by their label or other rifff raff. My only idea so far is to try to e-mail the band directly and say pretty please, but something tells me I'm going to end up empty handed.

It's kind of sad when you spend a lot of time remixing a song when the "vocal track" is basically the full song .mp3 chucked through a High Pass Auto Filter and an EQ8 with the mids bumped vaguely around where the singer is... and then that sadness gets somewhat hilarious when those bars end and you cut over to your main 8-bar drive that is clean as fuck by contrast... that is, until you realize how many hours you've pushed yourself to arrive unintentionally "lo-fi EDM"

Oh and fyi- I'm aware of the technique of extracting vocals if you were somehow able to get the instrumentals of a track then acquiring the difference of the two, but alas that is equally as hard to find.
