The Ability for Suite Instruments to Load Tuning Files

Post by Lazos » Fri May 22, 2009 1:30 am

I've posted this before, and am currently loving the Suite instruments but am supremely frustrated that there is no easy way to play non Western twelve-tone equal temperment on them!

I have LMSO X, and know how to midi pitch bend monophonic synth lines or even micro tune Sampler with key zones and the detune parameter. But all of these methods are less than ideal because they often alter the sound of the original synth or instrument rack because of some kind of midi issue (like canceling out glide or portamento).

I know there are plenty of the Abes that obviously love pioneering sounds, so . . . Anyone from Abe Headquarters or elsewhere at all that knows how easy it would be to implement .tun or scala or similar file loading in the Suite instruments? I have Zebra which does it, but honestly, I sometimes like the Ableton Instruments better. Perhaps in a bug fix? (I know that might be asking too much, but hey) I'd also pay for an update just for this feature.

Bump. Again, I'd love to hear something from Abe HQ about this, is it something that may get taken care of in M4L? I'd rather it be an integrated feature of the Suite instruments, since separately, they are going for as much as most other 3rd party instruments with microtonal capability. Mr. Henke? Anyone?

It's frustrating being limited to just 12 notes.

I realized my first post is weird in one part: "non Western twelve-tone equal temperment."

I meant to say "non-Western scales or other than 12 TET (12 tone equal temperment).

I see there are people reading the thread. So you all have any idea what I'm talking about? Don't care? What?

+1 for tun file support. It would be useful if Zebra had a "set default scale" option too..

An absolute must ! I am so frustrated when a modern instrument doesn't support microtuning. It pretty much means I can't use it, since I prefer just intonation... most of the tracks that really move me aren't in equal temperament... I just upgraded to Suite 8 and I'm really disappointed.. Please fix this, because it's really not that difficult to implement. Thanks !

Yes, I would very much love to have loadable/saveable tunings. AFAICT you can often hack it by using a pitch bend on every note and so on, but then things like arpeggiators go all wrong :(

an important feature if it is easy to use. I also would use live in my pursuit of non-western music forms

In fact, support for Scala/Tun oblige you to reprogram all MIDI devices...because it got to be internal, or transmitted in a non MIDI way (like inside a M4L patch).

That's why Scala/tun support is inside a synth...

ex : you can't transmit it from a M4L device to Operator, because it is MIDI and you can't transmit microtuning in regular MIDI
Some ppl tried to transmit pitch bend with every note (like Toby Bear Microtuner), but as pitch bend is monophonic...you can't play multiple notes at the same time (and there was troubles with note off, too).

But there are a lot of synths with microtuning option included :http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/
Look at the list

Some are missing, like the freeware Oatmeal...
If you search freeware microtuning VST, i think you will find some

PS : don't expect Ableton reprogramming all their MIDI devices just for few ppl like us :P
You can already find some M4L devices with microtuning support...inside them only of course.

great, what M4L devices have microtuning support?
best,
L
ps. it would still be great if all Live's instruments support microtuning - especially sampler.

+1

How come it was so easy to get this in old synths like TX802? It's so easy to add support for plugins!
