4 pin unstable

Post by chris ott » Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:11 am

Hi, I've been using Ableton for 8 years so this is humbling and it may not even be Ableton specific but I started out on a lap top back in the day on an M-Audiofile interface. I had a 4 to 6 pin firewire but it would randomly cut out and I would have to reboot the sound card (used to be so annoying).

After using desktops for years, I recently got a Windows 7 lap top. I ran to radio shack and got a 4 to 6 pin and plugged it into my Saffire Pro 10i/o and like magic, everything worked smooth and then the sound randomly cuts out in the heat of the mix. I know this has to be a common problem. Suggestions?

I used to struggle with the same kind of problem with my 13" Macbook.
I was switching soundcards etc, pulling my hair out as I didn't know what was causing it.
Turned out it was an incompatible firewire chip: at least some fw chips by Lucent are known to cause problems with soundcards.
I was told that Macs with Texas Instrument firewire chips would be rock solid.
Got a Mac with a TI chip and all started working fine.
