rewire from Abelton Live to reaper

Post by pistachio nuts » Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:35 am

Hey

Ive scoured everywhere for info : I use Live exclusively at the moment but I'm missing some features from Logic - I find recording and mixing easier in a linear editor because that's what I'm used to, I have logic 8 and seeing what is going on over at apple I'm certainly not going for Logic X and I've never particularly gelled with it anyway.
I keep hearing about Reaper, I've downloaded the Demo. Looks super powerful.
But my main criteria is how well it plays with Live. I'm on a Mac and Reaper has a Rearoute ASIO driver but Justin the guy that writes Reaper states that it was just a quick throw together while he was waiting on license agreement from Propellerheads and he suggest using Rewire.

not sure how it is on OSX but rearoute works great for me. Although I don't use it that much anymore.
I like to bounce the stuff and re-importv in reaper.

As for ReaRoute vs. Rewire: when Live is in Rewire-slave-mode you can't use VSTs in Live, when Live is in ReaRoute you can.

Also you could let Live be the master and Reaper the rewire-slave and then you can use VSTs in Reaper but can't records Audio into Reaper I think.

Maybe if you say more precisely what you're aiming for I can help you a bit more.

Reroute the sucka.
and I believe, (i could be wrong) but I believe you have to install REROUTE by checking the box for it when you INSTALL REAPER for it to be available. So, you might have to reinstall Reaper (i think, im not sure).

I'm on mac so no Rearoute.

I guess what I want to do is compose out of Live but record to another DAW. Thats the simplest way of putting it. Also from what I've read, the strengths of both programs : Live : amazing composition tool with racks, drum racks, clips, ect. Reaper - crazy good routing, mixing.

So Rewire seems to be the way to go - in fact as I mentioned earlier Reroute was just quickly coded till they could work out a lisence arrangement with Props - they say use Rewire over Reroute . Just need some assistance so I can give it a good workout to see if it fits.

I'm at work and don't have the details in front of me. Basically I installed a free virtual sound channel on the my MBP Reaper and Live would communicate through this. I have a diagram sitting on my desk in the studio. This wasn't straight forward and I never used it to actually make music. I was trying to improve performance on the MBP by using Reaper while still getting access to the instruments in Suite. Wasn't an improvement.
I will post details tonight when I get home.

Hmm that sounds interesting.
What I'm looking for I guess is to compose in live and record in another DAW - preferably Reaper. Instrument (live) to recorder (reaper). Am I making sense?

The singer I am working with came over last nite to record and what with the drama and the hour I didn't get to look at my notes. Sorry I will try again to nite.

I am having a problem understanding how you want to compose in Live yet record in Reaper.

What I was trying to do was Compose in Live and export the audio and midi tracks so I could bring them into Reaper for mixing. Since I am using the synths in Live Suite I needed to rewire back to Live.

My workflow is a two stage process - Compose -export Mix. The only reason to connect back is to aquire VSTi resources that are only in Live and this is something that Live doesn't support and needs some tom-foolery that doesn't really work very well.

My direction would be to abandon the Suite VSTIs and use pluggins that will run in both Reaper and Live. Omnisphere is at the top of that list. I would still compose in Live but the final mix would be in Reaper.

The end result of all this is that my current project will be composed recorded and mixed all in Live. I save up and buy a new computer and do the new project with Reaper as the mixing taget.

Sorry to take so long. The magic I found was

IAC midi driver http://fox-gieg.com/tutorials/2007/inte ... tion-midi/

SoundFlower virtual audio bus http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/

Here is a sketch of the interconnection between Live and reaper.

I expect you could use Soundflower and provide 16 channels into Reaper directly if you wanted to record I haven't tired that
