It´s a common practice to software companies to have a "roadmap" to new product releases to customers know about the future of the software they buy.Tone Deft wrote:give an example or stop making threads.Tweaking Knobs wrote:i mean other software companies talk open and wide about their new and upcoming releases..
You can include IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and others.
On the music side Cockos have an public "feature list" for Reaper 4 http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=69722

Re: why so much secretism about Live 9?
OK, thanks for the sanity check. I checked that link, looks like it's for software that's already available to the general public. so, not an answer and just naming companies won't work.
why be secretive? there's no reason to tell anyone anything. saying anything only allows the competition to keep up with them.
users think they're special, you're not, you'll buy the new stuff regardless. they can tap any number of Professional musicians on how well new features are coming along.

Maybe this can be true for music software companies, just because they don´t have companies as clients, and this allow than to hide new version features from the public at all, with corporate customers, generally software companies need to give to customers roadmaps.
You are right, we are not special, and probably we´ll buy the new version anyway.
But IMHO some screenshots and feature lists can stop customers from spend their money in other things BEFORE the new version arrive....

agreed. B2B software involves many many thousands of dollars of investments every year and a business' future is at stake with the tools they use.rsaulo wrote:Maybe this can be true for music software companies, just because they don´t have companies as clients, and this allow than to hide new version features from the public at all, with corporate customers, generally software companies need to give to customers roadmaps.
yep. "Live 9 will be out in October, I can wait until then and skip Live 8." people always get burned but Ableton also seem to try to appease people with discounts and coupons. You are right, we are not special, and probably we´ll buy the new version anyway.

me thinks their software team expanded with the C74 collab and big things are afoot. big freaky things. I don't mean m4L, the C74 guys can code for more than that, they can also work on the Live codebase. I can't imagine that not one single C74 coder is working on Live.

Re: why so much secretism about Live 9?
I don't want Live 9 because it will have a ton of new features, efx, synths, and functionality, 99% of the reason I want is because I want a stable version of the program and I'm hoping that's what we'll get.

I almost guarantee the opposite will be true. You will get tons of new bells and whistles at the expense of stability. The Coil wrote:I don't want Live 9 because it will have a ton of new features, efx, synths, and functionality, 99% of the reason I want is because I want a stable version of the program and I'm hoping that's what we'll get.
That’s the nature of newly released software.
Re: why so much secretism about Live 9?
I totally agree... I'm also a guitarist, and when I'm happy that I can play everything a guitar can possibly offer I might go looking for a forum where I can whinge on about waiting for guitar v2.0 to be released.skatr2 wrote:I've messed with live for years and only recently got serious with it. By that token I have a ton to learn as is and truly am not in a position to look forward to an environment change or a workflow change. Still getting comfy with the current one. I just don't see the huge push for new. Nobody has remotely touched the features present in the current setup. And I don't personally see all these "bugs" that many openly complain about.
Until that time I shall continue learning new techniques and writing new music using this great tool that somebody invented.
There are a couple of bugs though... strings sometimes go out of tune or even need replacing, or I drop a plectrum or two... any updates in the pipeline?

Hi There,
No we don't 'need' a new version, to make music.
And yes, we would all be happier with a more stable version (I would be F*cking overjoyed for one).
But -
It's actually not just about making music.
It's the psychological effect of the new product.
It's new
It's exciting
It's interesting
It's something to post on the forum about
It's something to spend your money on
It's the cult of Live
It may even have a new look (unlikely)
It my have a new graphic on the cover (please)
I got so pissed off with Live 8 that I stopped using it and went to Logic
Am I excited about Live 9 - Hell Yeh
Will I buy Live 9 - Hell Yeh

Re: why so much secretism about Live 9?
its the psychological effect of being manipulated into handing over my money
its the expectation of change
it helps me focus on a life of consumption not creation
its the experience of a marketing machine altering my hopes and aspirations
the live 9 buzz disturbs me, its like Pavlov's dogs are getting excited because they're used to hearing a bell every year. there's got to be more to being a human than this.

Re: why so much secretism about Live 9?
Actually now I think about it.
I've not upgraded NI since Komplete 6 (and won't be bothering with 8 ).
I was happily using Cubase SX before moving to Mac.
I've stopped buying needless software. I used to but every Audio Damage relaease without even thinking about it
I've not succumbed to my temptation to buy new controllers (although I am struggling with Maschine and Traktor S4)
After consideration, there is nothing Pavlovian in my response. It's just the anticipation of a Live release that 'just works' - Very unlikely I know
