Need help getting Live to control V-Drums via MIDI

Post by MustangsandDrums » Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:10 pm

I play a Roland TD-20 V-Drum kit at my church & Live handles our click, loop & backing tracks. Occasionally, I need to change kits mid-song so I'm trying to get Live to change the kit on my V-Drums via midi. According to the v-drum midi guide, it needs a midi program number on channel 10 to change to the corresponding kit - for example, a "program 50" message will select kit # 50. Live is seeing the output from Osculator correctly as far as I know - the MIDI activity leds are showing activity. My issue is getting Live to record & output that message from Osculator. Can anyone help me out?

I'm still a noob at midi so please go easy on me

Thanks!

You're getting a program change from Osculator, right? If so, route that input into a track in Live (set its input to Osculator and probably channel 10 if Osculator is indeed sending the message on that channel). Route the output of that track to some hardware MIDI outputs that are connected to your TD-20. You can also do this with an "external instrument" device.

The trick will be to send the program change to the drums without sending any OTHER MIDI data that you don't want sent to the drums. The easiest way to do this is to keep it on separate channels, but depending on how you've got everything routed you might find a cleverer way.

Hope this helped! Best of luck.

I figured it out. I was sending the correct midi commands into Live, but they were not being sent back out correctly. I had to change the Program setting under the Notes window of the midi editor to the correct kit number that I wanted it to switch to. For whatever reason, Live is only recording the program command, not the actual program number. So for each clip I have to change that program whenever I want to have the kit change.
