Max for live won't open device editor [Solved]

Post by bassik » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:48 am

Hello there,

Just bought M4L yesterday and at the first try I had the exact same problem.

I am running Live 8.2.2 + Max 5.1.8 on a win XP machine.

This is very annoying especially when you buy legit software and it starts having problems from the first day you use it...

Anyone found a solution?

Thanks for your reply

I have all the instruments, audio effects and midi device installed and working properly.

I have runtime working (using nonome and other monome patches).

Just the editor doesn't work and I got no error message in the max windows.
I just got max windows open and no patch editor.

Have seen something like that before?
One thing to note, I have installed a non legit copy of live and m4l long time ago but I have uninstalled it straight after I bought legit live.

Thank you very much ShelLuser.

I cannot check if it works now but I will have a go tonight and let you know.

Regarding max windows, I mean max 5 window when you can see messages errors etc...I hven't clicked on the unfreeze button as I haven't come across this issue before also because I have opened only Ableton standard m4l apps.

I am on win XP as well so I can easily follow your advice.

Just got an answer from Ableton technical support (very quick...against all the people who says that they are not good in offering technical support...)

-------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting Ableton.

Please reinstall the latest InterLok/PACE driver from: http://www.paceap.com/download.html

Then reboot the computer. You also might have to reinstall Max.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
------------------------------------------

Haven't tried it yet but can be of help for anyone who has the same problem, I will do this tonight after work and then post results. Also I haven't tried the solution by ShelLuser, I will do everything in one go.

Cheers

Hello,

Unfortunately none of the two solutions worked... :(

Anyone else have an idea?

to ShelLuser:
I have checked the hosts file and teh only I have is:

127.0.0.1 localhost

and nothing more...if you look at the syntax examples you should see something llike:

"IP address" localhost #description

Any idea?

Thanks for the support in the quest for legit software to work...

Cheers

I've once noticed that the device editor couldn't be opened while a Max standalone app was running (with runtime).

Do you have the same situation?

Hi ShelLuser,

thank you for your passion and involvement!!! much appreciated!

I have actually found the solution today hidden on the C74 forum which refers to a 1 year old Ableton forum post...http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... 2&start=15

the following worked for me:
[email protected] wrote:Sure!

just open the following file:

/private/etc/hosts

You can navigate to this by going to the Finder and choosing 'Go To Folder' under the 'Go' menu, enter '/private/etc/' and open the hosts file in textedit.

This is what the file should look like:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

If it doesn't you have found your problem and what u need to do is simply paste this at the bottom of the file and it should work...
Hope you'll solve it...
SO happy!!
Basically it was your suggested solution wiht the only difference that the syntax is the one above.

Now I will start to learn more and more.

Cheers

Hi there.

I'm on Mac Lion, Live 8.3.3 and MAX6

It has been working fine, but today, the editor won't open.
I can't find this file on my mac. Is there a special way of doing this on Mac.

thx
