Opinions Needed: Filtering 'Accapellas'

Post by gordonlindsay » Sun Aug 07, 2011 8:25 pm

Hi All,

I'm sure there are many of us out there who would love to free up some tunes by splitting out particular melodies/vocals from a particular song.

But how?

I had a bit of a brainwave, but want your knowledgeable suggestions first...

The basic premise of said 'brainwave' was from the same noise-cancelling technology you'd find in cancelling earphones/cars.

So a typical tune would have, say, a drum loop. The next bar would then introduce the same drum loop, but with a melody/vocal on top of it.

Would it be possible to phase the loop without the vocal in it 180 degrees (ie invert it) and then 'add' this to the second loop?

I'm envisaging a basic feedback mechanism that would work off a 1/2/4 bar delay to avoid lag. Likely something could be built in M4L?

What do you think guys? Any other advice?!

Cheers!

Gordon

ya, phase cancelling can be a pretty effective way of nabbing a capella's or other segments of songs from the original, but just like other means, it sometimes works great, sometimes not very well, depends on the tune.

Hi Dave,

Obvious next question, but what tools do you know of that might be able to help?

Cheers!
