Problems with renaming audio within project files.

Post by Tsuki » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:42 pm

When using Live for DJ'ing, I pull in an audio file, rename the audio file according to BPM etc, make a few versions of it e.g. starting from different places and loops, then drag the clips in one lump to the file browser where Live creates a Live folder which contains an .als file or an .alc file if it's a single clip. It also contains a 'Samples' folder which holds the audio, sometimes within an 'Imported' file.

All well and good...

Now renaming my files for multiple, many possibly verging on the organisationally obsessive, reasons. I alter the Ableton File name, the .als or .alc filename and the audio filename. Problem is now that when I try and drag the .als or .alc into a Live set the audio file is missing. Simply replacing the audio file doesn't help as the next time it is dragged in it's blank again. No good for smooth working. I therefore have to replace the audio files in each clip, drag the whole lot into the file browser again, delete the original and rename the new. This only takes a minute or two but for a MASSIVE collection were talking about weeks of work here.

If anyone can help with this issue I would be very grateful seeing as you saved me several songs composing time.

P.s. With the project folders in my browser, you have to open the file and then drag in the .als / .alc file. In days of yore when I worked with previous versions the different file types were separate and so the collections of clips could be dragged in straight from the browser. Now you have to open the project file which is an extra step at home and a bloody annoyance if making improvisations when playing out. If one is being totally ham handed at the time you can accidentally drag files all over the shop dropping them as randomly as an American bombing run. If anyones come up with any crafty solutions or workarounds that would be sweet.

Thank you all.

Cheers Blackmath, it is certainly very interesting and I may take some useful bits and bobs but any change in working really means a lot of time and I'm looking for a solution to my current problem at the mo.

If anyone has any other solutions to my renaming problem it would be very much appreciated.

The problem with renaming the files directly is that those als/alc files have the original filenames as part of their contents. That's ow they know what files to load. I've never looked directly at the als/alc files to know if you can edit them directly, though, and I'm not near my studio laptop to check for you.

Cheers Mage2k, I was guessing it was something like that, just wondered if anyone had a solution for editing it all within Live without having to go through all the extra crap.
