I've been in North London today doing some flat hunting, as it happens. All my friends warned me not to go, but to be honest the vast majority of London is business as usual. The news reports show about 20 different individual streets where shit is going down, but considering how fucking massive London is, 20 streets is nothing. We're talking a couple of hundred idiots in a city of millions.
Saying that, I'm not trying to play down the misfortune of the poor bastards who have had their homes / businesses fucked up because of mindless thugs. Just saying that London isn't the back-to-back disaster zone that a long-distance observer who's seen the news reports may think it is.
Funnily enough, I got back to Oxford and all the shops on my street have been advised by police to shut early due to rumours that rioting might kick off here as well. I didn't think stupidity was contagious - things seem a little tense but checking the local news and social networks, precisely jack shit has happened here. So I guess it's just the police playing it safe. I hope that continues to be the case, here and elsewhere.

beats me wrote:After reading up a bit I see the riots are mainly pointless with no higher purpose – just a violent extension of youth’s sense of self entitlement, and like with most western riots it’s people in shitty neighborhoods fucking up their shitty neighborhoods further.
If this was some kind of class war in the US people would be fucking up Wall St. and in London whatever the equivalent would be. But rioters are mainly too pussy to do something like that because they realize the police are going to be way more proactive in those areas and there’s a serious risk of getting injured, killed, or doing serious prison time. Burning down or looting the convenience store in your own neighborhood is both pointless and lazy. The rich and powerful are laughing their asses off.
Yeah, it's no class war. Just semi-organised opportunistic looting and smashing shit up because they can. There's no protesting at all since the first riot in tottenham on saturday. Half the reason the police are struggling is that they're trained for massive angry crowds coming at them. These little shits just disperse as soon as the cops charge them and regroup down the road.
You'd never have had the original protest in a states anyway. Man with loaded gun was shot and killed whilst being arrested and the police fired first, apparently.

so it is about nothing.
i've heard about it on the radio on the way to work the last 2 days but they just mention it like it's some kind of low pressure system building up or some other weather/normal event that has a degree of concern but little else. every time i'd hear it i'd wonder why they were rioting but it has been nothing more than a 10 second blurb.. "rioting is continuing in London. Stocks are down. Traffic is backing up locally at ________ intersection. And now, a message from our sponsor."
lame. pointless mayhem is worse than purpose driven mayhem.

As I am watching news yesterday, there isn't any good news. I hope that all my kababayan in London is safe. Our world is getting worse each day
