easily switch MIDI inputs?

Post by dboles » Fri Aug 12, 2011 2:48 pm

Hey everybody -
I've got a ton of different sessions where multiple MIDI tracks are specified to receive input from my keyboard (connected to a USB MIDI device). I want to know if there is any way to easily globally change which device the keyboard is connected to without having to go into the sessions and reset everything? I have several USB MIDI units that have MIDI inputs, and sometimes my setup changes and I leave units behind.

Is there any way to, say, set a series of MIDI tracks in a session to receive MIDI from "MIDI 1 input" (hypothetical name) and then change which MIDI unit is routing there (in Preferences perhaps)? I suppose I could always save multiple instances of the sessions with the different MIDI input sessions, but that's a pain. Especially if I make modifications to a session. Any ideas?

Not sure if this helps, but I usually add a midi track per input/channel. So if my Keyboard is putting out 4 different midi channels, I will have an input midi track for each channel, and route those tracks where ever I want. I also do this with 2 keyboards controlling the same channel, or maybe I want my midi out on one track to go directly to the plug but not record input, etc etc.

There are lots of things you can do with the midi routing to work around changing inputs. Also changing inputs can make Live hiccup if in mid performance.

That's actually very helpful - it's such an obvious solution, but I hadn't thought of it before. Argh!

This would probably work the best as my keyboard is never attached to more than one unit at a time, and this way I could attach it anywhere I wanted without having to do anything. Thanks for the great advice!

from my experience, all solutions are obvious in Live, it's just hard to see the forest from the trees sometimes.
