Dropouts on 8 core Mac

Post by zmartine » Tue Apr 19, 2011 4:21 pm

I've experienced this problem with as few as two audio tracks using no plug-ins or virtual instruments. Multicore processing is on, the buffer set to max, and all unnecessary inputs and outputs are disabled. Top number in the upper right hand gas gauge has not been more than %20. The "D" light in the upper right has been known to flash when there is a dropout, indicating hard drive overload. The dropouts are associated with audio only so far, not sample instruments.

I'm usually more of Logic guy, so I consulted a fellow propellerhead who is a hardboiled Liveaholic. His response was that he had experienced this problem as well and resolved it by moving all audio onto the system drive. This worked and has been working for the past week without a single dropout. I customarily run video, samplers and audio from 3 separate (but internal) drives and always thought this was the most efficient way to run large sessions that use video and a fair amount of samplers and audio tracks. My internal drives are all 7200 rpm with plenty of available space.

I have been wanting to switch from Logic to Live for my film work but this workaround doesn't bode well for using Live. I've also moved some of my sessions back over to Logic (with audio, sampler streaming and video remaining on dedicated, separate internal drives) and haven't had any dropouts. This would seem to point the finger at the software. Has anyone else experienced this?

also, i asked this a few times before, but havent gotten an answer..

when i save my projects, it only saves an .als file with no folder? how do i make it save in folders? it works fine on on my desktop..but not my laptop...even if i collect all and save, where does it go? there is no folder. :(
