Automation timing issues

I just want to draw in 16th or 8th note volume or filter curves on a track or group and Ableton always throw the timing completely off, I really don't want to crawl back to Logic with my tail between my legs over this, is anyone else getting this, or better still, have a solution for it?

cmd 1,2,3,4 @mac I think switches on/off, triplet etc.
