Drum-Rack vs. Arrangement View

Post by Theo Void » Wed Aug 17, 2011 6:29 pm

Hello there all. Just a quick question to see how all you pro's out there make your drum tracks. I've always found drum racks very intuitive and almost perfect for creating drum tracks. But lately I've been experimenting with using the Arrangement View: Track 1: Kick, Track 2: Kick(layer 2), Track 3: Snare, Track 4: Hi-Hat, etc. Then arranging the individual samples that way.

Anyone found any benefit of doing it the latter way?
Or, just share your drum techniques. Thanks

i like drum racks for playing live percussion with and for managing samples. once i've got a feel for how some thing is working i often split drum racks up onto multiple tracks - largely to simplify mixing and to allow me to have different 'loop lengths' for different elements in a drum line. there's a couple of ways of doing this and i often head for what takes least time to set up.

Ya thats pretty much what I do too.
Drum-Racks are pretty awesome.
I was just wondering how others do it.
Thx for the reply : )

I vary... sometimes using drum racks only, othertimes using drum racks for a series of drums; like I group all the hats together, claps etc.

I find it depends on how varying the beat is. If its a series of different patterns, but distinctly patterns, its visually easier to just lay it as one track and have drum racks do all the midi ness. However, if its a lot of kick in/out, hats in/out, and not as distinct points... easier to just see them all as different tracks.

Hope that shares something on your question. :P I wouldn't say I'm a pro for creating drum loops though.

Ya I'm not a drum loop pro either. That's why I was asking because I've focused so much on other stuff like, synthesis, arrangement etc that I neglected the basics. I mean I'm by no means a newb I'm just always trying to get better.

Thanx 4 the input

Never really liked drum racks as I'm a drum programmer rather than a player.

I use separate tracks and then group them together to add stuff like compression to the group.
