Light up buttons of APC40
Hi guys,
I am trying for long time now to light up the record arm, solo and activation buttons of my APC40 using max for live. I was succesful with bomes midi translator by just sending midi notes to the APC which would light up the buttons or shut them off.
Is there a similar way of controlling the APC's lights? I just can't figure out how to send midi to the APC with max for live. Maybe someone can show me an example patch?
Maybe i should to add, that i wrote a midi remote script which changed a lot of the standard functionality of the APC40, many things are shut down and many things work different. So i guess i can't change the record arm and solo buttons via the live API.

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
Here a little bit of patching I picked up from Darren Cowley. When building APC40 patches I keep it somewhere in the set so I can look up different controls and component for the APC40.
1. hit the button
2. select control surface (APC40 in your case)
3. select a control or component you with to access and it will give you the path in the message box.
So if you wanna light up a solo button you need to make the path for example
create a "path control_surfaces 1 controls 65" message box (the numbers are just examples, you will have to find the numbers yourself using the patch)
send it to a live.path
send the live.path to a live object
from there you can choose a variety of function messages, but something like "call turn_on" and "call turn_off" messages sent to the left inlet of the live.object should get you started.
I also recommend getting the LOM.Navigator device to figure out what function calls you have to choose from.
ALSO here is some older information about the APC40 that is still useful for learning http://max4live.info/content/m4l-notes- ... lity-apc40

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
yeah! thx for your reply! that's exactly what i am looking for! perfect!
Re: Light up buttons of APC40
Best advice is to build a master Bpatcher that listens to each control and has a corresponding live.object for lighting, that way you can turn button presses into lighting.... First step well made will always take longer but pay of in droves in the long run, if you have any question Juan and myself have been hacking the thing since day one!!

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
damn, you guys are awsome...
couldn't sleep till 3 o'clock in the morning because i had to figure out how to access the components of my modified APC script. finally i realized that it's not a problem at all, and that my script is actually even easier to use with max4live.
suddenly i begin to understand so many things...

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
Hi guys,
i am stil very happy because i was able to realize many of the things i always wanted.
but thing is missing: i could not figure out how it is possible to observe the APCs Buttons.i can set the buttons with "call send_value" and the "force option". but which is the get property to observe?
does anybody know?

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
If you send the path of the button to a live.observer and then send it a message of "property value" from the left output of the live.observer place a "route value" object and then connect to the left hand output a toggle then you'll see the action of pressing the button and releasing, through the control surface all button presses act as momentary rather than when you midi map a button it acting as a toggle...

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
I usually go from from the buttons live.path, send that to a t b l, send the triggers list out (or right outlet) to the right inlet of a live.observer, send the triggers bang out (left outlet) to a "property value" message box, send the message box to the left inlet of the live.observer.
Now out of the left outlet of the observer you can observe the press.
Now out of the left outlet of the observer you can observe the press.
Re: Light up buttons of APC40
I always use a route value afterwards as you'll get a bang message generally on start up so this filters it out...

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
Learnt it when objects in the gui would sometimes start up switched on and of course when set to momentary if they were buttons i could never get them back to the right colour state!

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
Thanks!
I don't know why i didn't think of sending a "property value" message to the observer. I used that LOM tool to browse the properties and functions and tried out sending different messages (obviously without much knowledge about what i am doing and obviously without much luck).
i can't wait to get home and turn on my apc and live...work sucks
i think i can imagine the structure you guys are talking about. actually i am using the route module quite often, since i got to know it. also very practical when cutting of the "id" from live ids ("id 234" -> "234"), while making sure that no other stuff is passed though.

Re: Light up buttons of APC40
This snippet is for the Launchpad but the principle is the same....
The other stuff if got going on is a nmuber of gates so that i only let messages through when in the second mode (the gate 3 object) and then routing of the output to one of 8 outputs (gate 8 object), i've also got the receive objects that allow me to edit the colours that are lit remotely.... the apc colours are from a value of 0 to 7 if i remember rightly....
