Touchosc over USB?

Post by chuskey » Tue Jul 20, 2010 10:44 pm

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but can TouchOSC be used over USB instead of WiFi? I'm getting ready to buy this software and it would make it much more portable if I didn't have to worry about always having a WiFi network.

Thanks!

It'd be great if someone hacked a way for this to happen, but unfortunately no you can't sedn OSC over USB. Apparently you can create an 'ad hoc' network directly between your pc and your i(whatever) without using a wifi router. I haven't tried it yet but I'm told it can be done... It seems easier to set up on mac but reportedly pc can do it as well. Maybe try it with mrmr (seeing it's free) first before you drop cash on TouchOSC?

No, there is no USB support currently - on android systems i can see this happening earlier than on iOS based devices. It really would be amazing to have such a setup, with the standard dock cable for the iphone/ipad, but it just hasnt been implemented yet. Hopefully hexler and st8 will be on this soon!

That being said - yes, creating an Ad Hoc network works wonderfully! as long as you're in a place that isnt overloaded with wifi noise as is. I've done it with both a windows laptop and a macbook - without the right translators, the windows system is a little bit more difficult, but really not much.

I use touchosc every day - and its completely worth it. :D

Thanks so much for the replies. That's exactly what I needed to know. I have an iPod Touch, but Touchosc makes the iPad look pretty darn enticing :)

That would be great !
NORMALLY it works well with ad-hoc networks, but I already had
massive problems in two clubs. Once because of too much wireless
noise from other machines, once I couldn't find any reason, but
I know that another act had problems with connecting 2 Macs via
ad-hoc network in the same club months before.

And one of my notebooks creates the network, OSC transmission
is fine, but it refuses to upload new templates from the
ToucOSC editor.

So +1 for USB support in TouchOSC !

+1 OSC via usb.

My exprience with adhoc networks is that they are very unstable and are not trustworthy for live performance. So, if adhoc networking is the best solution so far, the necesity of osc via usb is quite obvious.

This won't happen without dedicated hardware on iOS, unless Apple changes their development rules.

Super lame, but, that's the way it is... I agree with ss76 that it will be more likely to come to Android first.

Wireless is cool, yes.
But my main reason for using TouchOSC is the touchscreen
and the customizable controller surface incl labels.
So I dropped wireless completely at the moment and switched
to Line6 MIDI Mobilizer and send MIDI instead of OSC from my
iPod Touch. It works without any problems.
But you should consider the new iRig MIDI instead of MIDI Mobilizer
as it has several advantages over the Mobilizer for the same price.
But it's only for iPod Touch 3+ while Mobilizer works with cheaper
iPod Touch 1&2, too.

If you you use the MIDI adaptor method, can you still use the launch grid that has the names of clips? I guess it could do it with sysex.

It *could* be possible to program this, but I don't know.
I use TouchOSC as "normal" controller with buttons and faders...

I think I'm getting a bit mixed up actually. I've thinking of this

http://liine.net/livecontrol/

which is sort of an extra layer that uses touchOSC, TouchOSC on it's own doesn't have the session view with clip names? I'm pretty sure this wouldn't work with a wired midi approach.

Sorry, I meant it is not possible with Livecontrol at the moment,
but *could* be achieved via sysex (not sure about the sysex implementation
of TouchOSC) - but this would require a new remote script or some
kind of translation with MAX or something similar and a new
template for TouchOSC. So it would not be a small tweak, but
technically it could be possible.

So it's no option for you I guess.

Ah ok yeah I see what you mean. I bet someone out there has managed to get IP/UDP over the USB cable on a jailbroken device, something like this.

I experimented with these things a bit, was able to establish a usb connection and do
some basic things between pc and iPod Touch, but TouchOSC was not able to see this port
and send to it... I gave up as I couldn't find any support for this scenario on the net.
This was the point I switched over to MIDI as I don't use Livecontrol anyway.
