Delay when recording in Live with MPD32

Post by timbobreaks » Sun Dec 05, 2010 5:37 am

Hi all,

Would appreciate anyone's help on this as it's been driving me crazy for months.

My MPD32 is connected to live via USB, all of the transport controls work and all of the pads too - I believe I've got it correctly set up in Live. There is no noticeable delay when I'm triggering samples etc using the pads when I'm not recording but as soon as I hit record there is a noticeable delay (if I hit pads quickly Live doesn't register all of the 'hits'). I have an external midi keyboard which has no such delay when I hit record (every hit of a note is registered). I've tried the following so far:
- changed the latency settings in live
- Set the MOD to external sync
- changed the delay settings under preferences in Live
- changed the swing settings on the MPD
- reset the MPD32 to its factory settings

....nothing works.

If anyone has any ideas why as soon as I hit record I get a delay I'd be eternally grateful!

Thanks in advance.

Tim

Hi Tim, have you checked on your recording quantization settings?

Yes record quantization is turned off. Also when I'm recording using the keyboard on the same track (also plugged in via USB) there is no delay at all. I'm wondering whether it might be one of the settings on the MPD but I have made all the changes that other people have recommended. Wondering if there's any way to check whether it's an issue with live or the MPD.
If all else fails I might have to buy a midi lead and power plug for the MPD and try that.

Just noticed one other thing - there is the same delay when I just hit play (and not even record). It's as if Live can't handle the signals coming in at the same time. It might recognise the first hit on the pad at exactly the right time (no noticeable latency) but as soon as I hit the pad a few more times it starts missing beats etc. I've already put the virtual memory on my PC up to the max.

Thanks again for your help!

@timbobreaks: I had a similar issue a few month ago. Check your MIDI devices settings. In some cases the usb controller is availible 2 times for input and output. At this, disable the 2nd.

hope that helps

Wehkah, you are a life saver!! - I owe you a drink!! I changed some of the midi settings around (turned off what didn't need to be on) and hey presto it works like a charm. Not sure why a delay was resulting from the settings I had but who cares - it works now.

Thanks everybody for the ideas - loving this Live community!! :D

Cheers

I'm having issues with this, and "turning off what didn't need to be on" in the midi list didn't solve the problem.

I heard ableton coded live to behave like that way. When monitoring turned on Live puts notes delayed with the amount of the audio playback latency. When monitoring off Live puts notes at the timing when you hit the key.

Read this thread around 7,8,9 pages.
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=240364

Ableton tried to target those players who play their keyboard or pad acording to the timing of the sound of their playing instruments whose audio are routed to the daw. The intruments output from computer is delayed with the amout of playback latency. So if those player tried to play the intruments synced with the metronme as for this recording the key press will be ealier than it should.
