The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less", meaning that you're already caring the least amount i.e. you could not care any less.

Saying that you could care less means that you actually do care about it!

^ Yeah, Massive is your friend for this bass. Rumour is that Skrillex uses an LFO to scan the wavetable position on certain oscillators, particularly the Modern Talking one. Worth playing around with this, and use lots of automation.

The YOY bass is also simple enough on there, three square waves pitched an octave apart, usual slow LFO filter wobble and turn the sample and hold effect on, with a high pitch and 100 % wet.

Does anybody know what sort of effects he puts on the basslines? If any.

You should check out this guy-

http://mrbillstunes.com/2011/05/11/the- ... ass-sound/

He has some great tutorials on Live, covering nearly everything (well, a shitload :) ) that a Live user could ask for.
He has a 1-5 part series on getting that 'Skrillex Sound'. :)

I think he has about 35 free video tutorials....or something.

I find his approach really cool, clear and interesting.

Mr Bill rocks!

This might be a bit off topic but this max patch WoFO will automate a lot of what Skrillex does:

Regardless of what all you elite super star producers lurking the Live forums think, I think Skrillex is quite innovative, unique and just awesome! His production skills are amazing and he's done what we all wish we could do. He's created a totally unique, signature sound that just so happens to be f'n awesome! And judging from interviews, dude is chill as hell. Saw him at Identity a few weeks ago and it was the highlight of the whole day.(Ok Rusko and DJ Shadow may have topped it.) But still, sick ass set, and people were going insane for this dude!

ANyway, on the topic of creating his sounds I'll share what I've learned :

In FM8 there's a feature called morph. You can combine four sounds to make a slowly morphing bass. Other than that I don't have much experience in FM8.
I'm pretty good w/ Massive though and I've made some nasty sounds on it. Scanning the Wavetable w/ env and LFO's.
LFO or performer on a Low-pass filter.
Tele-tube -Also for a higher screechier sound use the Phase in the mod osc.
I usually keep it basic when making patches in Massive. The real fun begins when you start drawing automation on the MIDI clip. Not just w/ Massive paremteres but also w/ other devices. Redux, Saturation(sinoid wave) etc.

Other things to keep in mind. One does not achieve these sound in one track using one synth.
Duplicate the track and use different settings. Use another synth.
Resample, and chop up the results, apply effects to individual slices.
Use the call and response approach.
These days basslines aren't just a sequenced melody in a synth. They are a combination of sometimes 6-10 tracks working together to create the bassline, and a ridiculous amt of automation and all this side-chained to the drums.

Also, when you do start to get these sounds you need epic drums and chord progressions to compliment it.

OK, I'm done. Sorry about that

^ All true.

Also, some sort of vocal efect is clearly present, I don't think he's just using synths for the 'talking sounds'. CM magazine suggested using Melodyne. I've just started experimenting with NI's The Mouth and have found that it's pretty useful too.

Ya, those talking sounds are created by using formant filters and automating the different vowel peaks.
A filter wobble and some bit reduction on top of that makes it really nasty.

Also, I've been experimenting w/ Vocoder and I'am getting some amazing sounds.
I literally spoke into a microphone and used a simple saw carrier signal and made bass-lines that way.

There's information on this topic all over the interwebz! Like, literally EVERYWHERE! Search this topic on youtube and theres too many videos to watch. Google, same deal. Thing is, lots of people attempt it, some have gotten close but I don't think anyone has nailed it yet.

I understand the desire to imitate the sounds you like. It's definitely a great way of learning new techniques. But it's also the fastest way to get seriously discouraged. Those are the hardest sound to make. The ones you analyze the fuck out of and can never get exactly right. I feel ya though cuz I do the same thing.

Also, check this out: http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=198681

Biggest collection of skrillex threads.
This is the dubstepforum
Warning: Don't start a new thread asking "how to sound like Skrillex."
These people will tear u a new ass-hole. It is the single most hated topic on the internet, I swear!
These dub step purists really hate this guy (or are jealous.) It's annoying but the second u mention Skrillex, Fliming ensues!
