An idea about full-lenght albums. What do you think?
An idea about full-lenght albums. What do you think?
Hi guys,
i was wondering: isn't it ironic that dj's share their albums online on 1 single audio files - ie as a single coherent entity - while albums of original music always come in separate tracks?
What about also offering albums as 1 audio file, just to make the statement that albums also are an entity made to be listened from beginning to end, uninterrupted?
Ben

Re: An idea about full-lenght albums. What do you think?
i personally like the concept of an album very much, but at the same time enjoy the convenience of being able to choose which ever track i'd like to hear.
having one single track feels a bit demanding, unless it really is one long track.
there are not many albums out there which i really like to listen to as one single piece each time again, but there are plenty ones where i like to arrange some tracks in playlists together with others to create new sequences of meaning.

demanding is good
we got lazy. esp online. i can't remember listening to even a track without clicking around...

i like randomness sometimes. when i come across a dj set or live show that's hecka long when i'm in shuffle, i just skip it. you can try to force a hand, but, ultimately, it makes it less accessible.

Re: An idea about full-lenght albums. What do you think?
I did both and it worked out well. My last album was more or less meant to be one continous piece of music, but I knew most people wouldn't sit through the whole thing. So I sold it both as a continuous file, and as seperate tracks. Sold about equal amounts of both versions surprisingly.

the word "album" is so 70'ish (at least in italy)

i think there's a beauty in creating a musical experience which lasts longer than a single track quickly consumed online. recently i tried to deprogram myself and listen only to albums, uninterrupted, as an experiment...memes_33 wrote:why? i don't disagree with you, but just playing devil's advocateBenshik wrote:thats exactly my point. we must save the album!9V wrote:the word "album" is so 70'ish (at least in italy)

It helps if the music has dynamics, that way there is no ear fatigue to get in the way of listening to an entire album...
I believe this is one reason most people don't listen to albums in their entirety these days.

i hear you, but our attention spans are depreciating daily!
look at a newscast from the 70's vs. today. you'll notice there are 2-3 times more cuts/edits in today's newscasts. MTV pioneered the 'fast-edit' style that is so commonplace now. everything is moving faster. you can attempt to fight it or slow it down, but i doubt it will do much. i prefer to embrace changes as they come. besides, who's to say an hour long musical piece is any more valid or complete than a 3-minute one? sure, you can fit more ideas in an hour, but do you need to?
i remember buying a cd a few years ago with like 10 songs. most of them were under 1 minute- the whole thing was about 15 minutes total. i felt a little gyped at first, but when i began to think about it, the only reason i felt cheated was the time. sure, music is time-dependent, but what's more important- the amount of time spent listening, or the experience gained from it.
a 5-minute DMT experience can be just as intense as a 12-hour LSD trip, sometimes even more so.
