"Make me sound like old transistor radio" how to ideas plz

Post by rikhyray » Sat Aug 27, 2011 1:51 pm

That is what a saxophone player wants to sound like by the end of his solo. Have some ideas (never had transistor radio though) but I am sure some of you will have better ones.
If I understood him right he probably wants to fade out to some kind of "transistor sound" as his solo fades till the end of the song.

I'd try a bandpass filter. AM radios have audio bandwith cutoff at ca. 4.5 Khz.
Maybe a speaker simulation can help too.

I'd go with this chain :
eq (bandpass 40-5000Hz) (...might add a random-lfo driven filter in paralel as well)
-->'dynamic tube'
---> maybe 'amp'/'cabinet'/'saturator'
----> eq (remove annoyances)

of course tools like speakerphone and guitarig etc. are great as well for this task...

"futzbox" 14 day free demo (ilok)

or you could try playing his sax through an actual radio and recording the output with a mic ? or even directly ?
those mini-jack -> FM shortrange broadcasters are usually about $10 and are pretty common. Even apple stores stock them.

you could also try seeking out some impulse responses online ? I guess you tried that already though

Transfer the file to your phone and play it back on the internal speaker while re-recording into live via a microphone.

Just an idea
