Roland SPD-30 and Roland KD-7

Post by suspended childhood » Sun Aug 28, 2011 1:13 am

I am having trouble connecting my kd-7 to my spd-30. The spd-30 is working just fine as expected. The kd-7 I just connected and can't seem to confirm it works. it is connected from the output jack on the kd-7 to the external trigger input 1/kick on the SPD-30.

When i hit the spd-30 pads, the corresponding notes/ sounds get triggered.

I can plug and unplug the cable and see that it is at least seen in the spd-30 during movement of the cable, but the spd-30 does not show a connection to the trigger outside of plugging/ unplugging the cable. I even bought a new cable to make sure that wasn't the issue.

The cable I used was the stereo 1/4 inch cable Roland ships with the device. But the device first entered into production around 92 so some things may have changed since then.
I also tried a mono to mono cable and a stereo to right and left mono cable and that didnt work either.

I tried all ports and get the same results.

I went through the configs to ensure the internal setting was set for the kd-7 on the pads, and we also turned up the sensitivity. The pad shows a dark color in the configs when the cable is plugged in. While plugging in the cable the sensitiviy indicator shows then goes away right away. Same when I unplug the cable. When I step on the pedal, i see a graphic in the display on the pad that shows a connection. But no indication of trigegring or sensitivity levels.

The trigger was purchased brand new at sam ash last year 2010 around the end of april. This is the first time it has been out of the box.

I don't have any other triggers to test.

Any ideas? Did I miss something here?

The KD-7 has a polarity switch on it that you could try. It may be set incorrectly and causing problems.
Otherwise, the SPD-30 is pretty straight forward with external triggers so if it isn't the polarity it may just be the dreaded hardware problem.

If there is any way for you to hook up another external trigger maybe at a music shop or something then I would try that before sending anything back.

Let me know how it goes. Good luck my friend.

*also, there is an output and an audio-in jack on the KD-7 but you probably already know that.
