toatl newbie question about sampling

Hiya, I'm fairly new to DAWs and so far for sampling I have been recording audio to the timeline and copy and pasting it as I saw fit.

However I have a feeling this is not the way it should work. Is there a better way to do this?

Is there such a thing as VST sampler that would behave pretty much like hardware sampler? If yes which one would you recommend for use with live?

ANY help (and if possible a little explanation) is greatly appreciated...

There's an "instrument" I guess I would call it called Sampler in Ableton. It's in the list at the top left with all the other instruments. Double click on it to open a new instance of it, and you can drag your audio clips into it. From there you can slice and dice.

"Sampler" is an instrument that comes only with ableton suite. "Simpler" is the sampler in the basic ableton package, which is a very no frills sampler that plays back single sounds. If you have suite, you can use sampler, which can also be purchased separately, but for the price you might as well upgrade to suite. Sampler should do the trick, but if you don't have suite, or want to upgrade/buy sampler, something for pc that is simple but very functional, and also free, is http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php which is a free (discontinued) sampler.
if you want to drop a load of cash, you could get Kontakt: http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/ ... kontakt-4/ the "industry standard" sampler, it can do most anything, and has tons of features. if you go this route you might look into getting komplete 8 for about 200 more, which includes kontakt, and loads more vst instruments, sound libraries, etc...

Hahaha! So true... I already have a handful with my hardware synth as it is, so your words are very wise my friend

While I'm on the subject, what would you do :

1- Buy Live Intro and buy Kontakt 5
or
2- Buy Live suite and use Sampler

It roughly comes down to the same price with maybe a 50$ difference...

BTW Simpler is too simple for my needs... I may not know how to do it, but I know what I'd like to do and it seems obvious that simpler is too limited...
