EXS24 import failure
EXS24 import failure
Hi,
When I import certain EXS24 instruments (many) from the Logic library, the import fails with the message no presets could be imported from the sample file or volume. I haven't been able to find other threads mentioning this problem. Is there a workaround? As an example of one that fails for me, the instrument "Chinese Guzheng Zither" fails to import, giving this message.
Thanks,
-Luddy

Re: EXS24 import failure
same problem here, doesn't work with any exs-24 instrument i've tried.
Re: EXS24 import failure
bump.
Does anyone know what the actual limitations of the import function are, i.e., what features are causing it to fail? I'd be willing to manually rework some of these instruments to get the imported. I thought it might be as simple as having multiple groups in the EXS24 instrument, but I stripped one instrument down to single groups and I was still unable to import the individual groups.
There are so many instruments out there in this format, including a ton that Logic users have made themselves, that it would be great if the import function in Live worked a little better than it does at present...

Re: EXS24 import failure
I have tried importing 2 Cds, namely Analog Archive 1 & 2. It's strange because it will import some of the EXS24 programmes but not others. In some cases it will import the program but cant find the files so i put the sampler instrument in the same folder as the samples. It worked but as far as the ones it wont import i have no solution. i tried changing the access to the files on get Info but that didn't help. I also tried to tell it to open with Live but Live was greyed out. I even loaded the sampler instruments into logic & re saved them & then tried to import them into Live but with no success. I am importing the ones that Live will accept & will then refer to Exs24 sampler instruments & load the samples myself & copy the patch. Its so weird how it accepts some & not others.

no presets could be imported from the sample file or volume
Odd I've just had this crop up for the first time tonight. All my other EXS25 presets have imported smoothly before...

Re: EXS24 import failure
I haven't been able to import a single patch that I'm interested in lately. I have a very nice string library in EXS24 format that I'd like to use under Live, and the patches are not *that* complicated, but the import is a botch. It 'succeeds' in the sense of generating something, but it's unusable, and too far off to correct.Pitch Black wrote:no presets could be imported from the sample file or volume

For most of the content that comes with Logic, I'm simply unable to import it at all. I've resorted to resampling some of the instruments by generating a single wave file in Logic with a string of notes, and using Live's slice to MIDI to create an instrument in Live. This is OK, but loses any modulation other than velocity in the original patch.
I really wish this were more bulletproof in the case of EXS24. It seems like it should be -- there is nothing I can think of that can be done in EXS24 that can't be imitated by Live + racks and maybe a few MIDI effects.

Re: EXS24 import failure
Hi
passing by here looking for anything about managing EXS24 and Sampler …
I'm not a big user of Sampler but for what I've done 'till now I never got problems when importing from EXS24 ;
but most of time I'm handling rather simple instruments. It seems (accordingly to other threads and forums) that importation's problems come with more complex instruments …

Well, I've tried it just now and it works, tried some other ones and same success …As an example of one that fails for me, the instrument "Chinese Guzheng Zither" fails to import

Re: EXS24 import failure
Hi again …
well, being a bit tickled by what I read in the forum about these importation problems and that I didn't noticed before,
I've then done some experimentations with importation and dive a bit more in Sampler (I actually don't really now "from inside").
So, I confirm, so far for what I've done, that I got no importation errors during these tests…
but
I discovered that multi-layered instruments where not correctly "translated", except for those which layers are selected by key on/key off (a rack of two instruments is then the result). For all the other ones, there is only one non racked instrument, with all the samples but no selection … even for an evident and primary velocity selection method !
and that changes the story a lot because I'm using mainly EXS24 instruments which have no equivalent in Sampler, and Logic since v.8 can't no longer be slaved by Live

Re: EXS24 import failure
Hi. As I've been getting that same error message lately when trying to import EXS libraries, I emailed Ableton Support, and got the answer that .exs files created or saved in logic 9 are not compatible with Sampler ATM. That completely covers my situation; I used to be able to import exs just fine, but since I moved to a new computer, I've had to reopen all my exs patches in logic for it to be able to locate the samples on this new harddrive, and thus they have all been re-saved in logic 9. And since then, I haven't been able to import exs presets in Sampler.
I've replied to that email with my exact feelings about this issue. Until it is fixed, Sampler does not do what it says on the package. I'm hoping for a fix with Live 8.2.2.

Re: EXS24 import failure
Unfortunately the 8.2.2 update doesn't address this, so Logic 9 EXS patches can't be imported

Re: EXS24 import failure
No, I noticed that. I also pointed it out to Ableton Support, who replied that they are working on it.
Re: EXS24 import failure
I ran into the same problem this morning trying to import an EXS file from Logic 9. Any news on this fix?
Re: EXS24 import failure
i ran into the same issue a few weeks back and was told by Ableton Support that there is still no fix. they say the only workaround is saving in an older Logic format (pre-Logic 9) before opening the file in Live. you can actually do this in Redmatica's Keymap Pro or ProManager. they call it a Logic "Classic" Format. of course you have to be careful not to open the file in Logic 9 first because it will update the file to the new formatting.
Re: EXS24 import failure
There is a workaround for this if you still have Logic 8 installed on your machine. It's possible then to save your sample instruments in the old, pre-version 9 format. Just boot up Logic 8, open the required instrument in an instance of EXS24 and press the edit button to go to the sample editor. Choose 'save as' and save to the location of your choice. The instrument file that you saved should then import into Ableton.
Incidentally, it's also possible to install Logic 8 on top of Logic 9, provided you still have your Logic 8 install discs. You'll need to use a program called Pacifist, available from http://www.charlessoft.com/. First of all rename your current Logic Pro application as Logic Pro 9. Open your LogicPro.pkg installer file using Pacifist and install just the Logic Pro.app file to your applications folder. Best to rename it Logic Pro 8 or somesuch to make sure you don't get confused;-)

Re: EXS24 import failure
Another update without fixing this feature. Come on, guys - your product doesn't do what it says on the package, and I've paid for a functionality that I need, but I'm not getting. The customer is always right, remember?
