MIDI LFO's

Post by secretagentgel » Thu Apr 07, 2005 10:39 pm

would love to see a MIDI plugin that just sends CC MIDI data based on LFO's to anything within live. there are times when i dont want to draw sweeps as envelopes.

thanks,

corey

Hello there. Just browsing this forum when i noticed this thread. I am currently a Cubase VST5 user but have Ableton 4 though not really used it yet as I was a bit unsure about it's midi/VST capabilities and wether I could use my UAD and Creamware cards with it. Now version 5 is coming out I am going to take the plunge and give it a try (I got Live 4 in a very good swap deal). Anyway, that's my life story (so far) and will explain my severe lack of knowledge regarding Live. I currently use either 8LFO or CCLFOv2 in Cubase VST5 with EnergyXT. 8LFO by Dunk's MIDI plugins is a VST fx with 8 LFOs that can each send out controller messages and CCLFO by Haydxn is a VST fx with a single LFO. Both are freeware and can be found at http://www.midiplugins.com/default.aspx This site also has other really useful MIDI plugins - most of which are freeware.

Please proceed to tarnish my good name and chuck things at me if these are not compatible with Live. As I say my knowledge of Live is very minimal at the moment but I really want to investigate it's MIDI/VST capabilities soon.

Yes, that's right.
The only thing with Live is that it does not host midi VST's (the VST standard says there is no such thing, I have been informed) so they have to be hosted in EnergyXT or Bidule (my choice). That works OK, but there is a little hazzle setting it up and having to tweak the LFO outside of Live.

So I would also very much want to have an "8 LFO with multiple targets" in Live.

Hi Conny. Do you/can you use Bidule as a VSti within Live or can it be run only as a standalone outside of Live? I use EnergyXT mainly as a VSTi within Cubase in which I then link the midi VSTs (and get over the VST limits, including the limit on number of VST instruments/insert effects, set by Cubase VST5). Would it be possible to run EnergyXT like this within Live? Sorry, just being lazy, I know I should just reinstall Live and experiment with it. I have just used Live briefly, Rewired to Cubase, before I had to reinstall Windows XP and reformatted my hard drive.

Yes and no.
Bidule has a VST(i) bridge, that only gest you one instance of Bidule per Live set. And Bidule sort of runs as standalone but the bridge handles the audio and midi connections between the host and Bidule.
You still have to open the Bidule layout manually (not the program but the layout with your VST's etc) .
But besides that, it works very good.
As for midi back to the host, Live will not take this from the VST(i) or Bridge. You'll have to insert (if on PC) a Midi Yoke out in bidule and use the corresponding Yoke in for Live.
Which also works OK.
I'm quite convinced that Bidule will run as a full VST in not so long time, probaly by version 1.0 (we are at 0.8 right now).

As for EnergyXT I don't know but it seems to work more like a full VST but you will still have to get the midi back into Live with Yoke or something, I think.

LFOs would be excellent for lighting and video. Right now I'm drawing in pan, tilt, gobo rotation, video effect, etc CC curves by hand. Having them generate themselves on the fly automatically would be awesome.

Does anyone know of a standalone app or plug-in that will generate LFO-based CC curves?
