Another "Sync Two Laptops" thread. Via Ethernet or Wireless

Post by ronanconlan » Mon Sep 12, 2011 12:36 pm

We're both using Windows 7 and need to sync Ableton on both. Preferably without needing extra hardware and without using MIDI cables.

If we're using an Ethernet cable will we need some kind of hub or router in between or can the cable just go straight from laptop to laptop?

We're doing it because have some sets with time sig and tempo changes - we don't use clips or scenes; we just play guitars into and out of ableton with audio interfaces. The only thing we need from the sets is to have the tempo and time sigs all mapped out and for Transport to start at the same time and stay in time.

I searched through a lot of the other threads but most of the useful-sounding advice pertained to doing it with Macs or using external MIDI hardware.
As I said, we're looking to do it with as few cables as possible; ideally over ethernet or wireless.

I read a method for Mac that sounded very simple (establishing a local network between the laptops via ethernet cable and selecting "network" as a MIDI device in Preferences. Toggling the relevant buttons like "Ext" tempo sync etc.
Would that work / work the same way on Windows?

Any tips appreciated.

I think you need a third party program. Here's something I found doing a search on 'midi sync Ethernet windows':

Solution found.

Just needed ipMIDI. Very straightforward, can just connect directly with the ethernet cable.

There seems to be absolutely zero drift between the two metronomes. Using Live 8.2 and 8.2.1 here.
