keeping my laptop OFF the internet...

should I make my laptop just for music? what short/long term problems can I plan on having if I'm using my laptop as a home computer AND a music computer?!?!?!

keep them seperate is a good idea, but if you keep it uptodate virus checker / scanner wise and dont go on any iffy web sites you should come across to many problems - but ive found i do need to put my laptop on the net for updates and things, but ive now networked the 2 but only hook them together when needed

installing and uninstalling lots of programs apps (as you would on an "everything" PC) could junk up your registry faster.

there are registry cleaners available, but generally if you have the CHOICE to use it as your everything PC vs. your music only PC (i.e. you have another computer to use for the internet), then you should just keep it as an audio only computer.

neither way will give you zero headaches, but keeping it focused on music only means any headaches you have will be simpler (pun intended) to trouble-shoot.

true true. thanx for the replies. Yeah I got a good reg cleaner, so I should be down. I have another computer I can use for internet, but its OOOLLDD. Its got
Win98 on it. Getting connected to the internet would basically be the only thing goin on lol. Within the next week I'm gonna be formatting my laptop and goin up to 512. I guess I just gotta wait and see what works out. My room is small dude... I'm running out of space!!!!

i've set up my mac with 2 user accounts. my 'home' one which i use for internet, work etc, and a seperate 'ableton' user account for using ableton or any other music program. i find this easily seperates the 2 almost to the point of seperate computers, but without having to pay for them.

i have a shared folder as well so if i download anything on the main account for music, i just save it into the shared folder and it can be accessed by my other ableton account.

I cant say I`ve experienced problems..
I usually keep a nice ghost package at hand giving me the option
of a really quick reinstall from time to time.. with all of the most needed
apps installed.

This is a really good idea. One additional piece of advice if you do this is to disable the auto-protect virus options while you use your audio apps. That will cut down the overhead as the scanner won't constantly be running on all the files you are working on.

I also use Firefox as the Adware pop-up nightmare doesn't occur on it yet. There are a lot less vulnerabilities on it so far.

Keep it seperate. Don't even use a network connection on your music computer, or you will find youself surfing ableton forum all the time instead of making music. Trust me.

I have no issues using the internet with a PC.

I don't get pop-ups or spyware.

There are steps you can take to prevent these things. here are a few that work well:

1. Get a good anti-spyware program. PAY FOR IT.... do NOT get a free one. Think about this for a moment.... in this world, NOTHING is free. So a company giving away free anti-spyware is most likely a spyware program itself. Webroot SpySweeper is excellent, and I recommend it highly.

2. Customize your cookie preferences. I use Third Party cookies always disabled. First party cookies set to Prompt. And always allow session cookies.
This way I select the first party cookies I want to keep, and all other are blocked or deleted when Internet Explorer is shut down.

3. The new Windows service pack has a pop-up blocker... but I keep it disabled. I prefer the blocker built into Google Toolbar. Google toolbar is an excellent product. I use it constantly, and can't imagine the internet without it. Check it out.

4. Periodically clean out your temp internet folder.

Just to chime in on this, it might serve some purpose for organization etc. but really the truth be that OSX doesn't require a separate account for the internet or anything. Native Instruments copy protection is a little weird about user accounts from what I know, and I'm not into dealing with the hassle of separate accounts for that reason omong others. Modern OS's deal with memory so well that it's not much of a problem.

Windows might be different this way, but OSX is pretty much tweak free.

Wanna keep your PC clean? Stop downloading the porn. Seriously on my old computer (before I went mac I used a PC) my friends thought it would be funny to surf porno sites (Fuck you Dan) and that shit totally fucked my PC over. I used everything to stop the spyware and porno popups. i was like fuck it and bought a G4 last december. Word to the wise if you like the pornos and like to make music .... say no to the porn (at least on the computer you use to make music lol).
