Showing Parameters Changed while Changing them

I know this can be done as ill.Gates' APC40 template does this. How can you midi map something to wear when you change the value of something (lets say an EQ or a beat repeat) it automatically goes to that window or panel and it will show you the effect being changed?

I've searched for it, but I probably just don't know what to search for.

you can map a knob/button to the device/tracks' "header"..
