Drumrack/Impulse/physical outputs etc. Please advise/tips

Post by buurjongenshon » Thu Sep 29, 2011 2:41 pm

I have a problem to decide what to use.. DrumRack or Impulse with grouped channels.
Here is what i have

DrumRack:
A main channel with the drum channels grouped together in that same rack. Te benefits are that I can have more then 8 sound in the rack. Disadvantage is that, when unfolding the drum rack, i do not get my channels to show up on my Remote SL. Another advantage is that in this rack I can set up FX just to use within the rack channels. Now I have 2 questions. Is it possible to get the channels within that rack to show up on my remote sl. And a more important one, how can I get the individual channels to route to different physical outputs, since only the drum rack channel itself seem to have the option to route it. but then i have them all on the same outputs. I could extract the channels from the drum rack, but then i get all separate parts for kick, snare etc. and looses the ability to play the sound together from my keyboard. Just the kick on one channel and the snare on the other channel. playing in drums seems then ridiculous because i will loose the sound from the drum rack itself

Impulse:
Another option would be to use Impulse. Disadvantage is that I only have 8 sounds (I know there are ways to get more but it just get messier that way). I then have a separate channel where my Impulse device is in and another, grouped channel, where all my separate drum channels are in. This way I can route all drum channels to physical separate outputs. I will then loose the option for having its own dedicated FX, so I need to use the global sends for this..

What i am trying to accomplish is to have ableton work as a drum computer on stage, with separate outputs and the possibly to expand the sounds when new songs comes up. I will make a "backing track", with all the songs in one live pack, so I only need to set up the mix one time for all the songs within the live project..

Any suggestions or tips/tricks are welcome

One option is to set the channel of the drum rack to Sends Only, essentially muting it. Then make new audio channels, and select their Audio From as individual drum rack channels. If you are talking about physical outputs like, out of your soundcard jacks, another option is the External Audio Effect device.

thanks, the external audio thingy works fine. the other option i know about. i use this in the impulse setup. wish somehow i still could have remote control of the separate drumrack channels on my remote sl screen. since it only shows up drums, while in the impulse mode, when channels are grouped, as soon as you expand the group it shows the separate channels on the remote sl screen. the drum rack doesn't do this. and just taking out the channels of the drum rack would extract the midi files from it...grr

you could stack multiple impulses via instrument rack and put scale or pitch effects before them so they trigger in different keyboard ranges.
