Live 5 and Powercore (+virus plugin) and aud-1 tests .

Post by waldo » Sun Jun 19, 2005 10:16 pm

got Live 5 up and running with my Powercore compact and the virus plug in ,

sending 4 midi channels to 1 instance of the virus plug (like the so called multi)

prefs :
asio : 10ms ,
plugin buffer size : (1024)
latency compensation : ON !

total % : 5 %

all other powercore added plugs around 2-5% each ...

Uad-1 is even better !
every plugin around 1% cpu load..

will go on testing and post results later.

Great news! Thanks for running these tests waldo.

What are the specs of the machine you're running this on? What kind of CPU utilisation do you get with the Powercore in Live 4? It was a very welcome unexpected surprise to see that plugin buffer size override on the beta prefs!!!

hey Waldo, could you advise on what your computer specs are?

2% to 5% on your computer could be 1% to 3% on someone else's computer, or 6% - 15% on my computer.

so it helps to know your machine specs as well.

cheers.

afaik live 4 also had around 1% host CPU load for each UAD-plugin

The UAD-1 should be pretty much the same under Live 5, although it would be great if someone could test it.

However, the PoCo should be much better 'cause TC admit themselves on their website that Live's performance is dismal because it uses small plugin buffers (it uses a huge chunk of CPU just continually moving all the tiny buffers back and forth between the PoCo and the computer). Now that we can change that buffersize, the problem should be fixed.

I'd love to see a performance comparison on the Powercore using buffers on 128, 1024 and 2048 (same plugin buffersize set in both the PoCo and Live 5 preferences).

Performance with the Powercore is very strange. In my tests, when you set the Live 5 Plug-in VST Buffer size to "As Audio Buffer" it almost always has reasonable performance. Even with smaller audio buffers.

The UAD made no problems even in Live 4, but is now latency compensated.

is it possible to freeze UAD-1 or Powercore FX in Live 5, and free up the DSP to use elsewhere?

hiya wldo

how are you liking the powercore and the uad-1? ive given bothof them a good long look...i like the idea of fx having its own processor, but i use waves diamond and well...considering how much the damned thing cost me, im not real hot to switch formats unless ive got a very good reason.

Sinjin, have you seen the new Waves Netshell APA ethernet DSP solutions?
these are basically external DSP boxes for Waves plugins. $1200 and $1800 USD (preorder) at audiomidi.com however the include the Q-Clone and IR-L for free (which is worth about $1200 anyway)

Perhaps since you have so much invested in Waves already, this would be a good option for you. its not yet compatible with ALL waves plugins, but there are some of the usual suspects (cpu hogs) that are already compatible.

here's the compatible plugs:
L3 Multimaximizer
L3 Ultramaximizer
IR-360 Surround Parametric Convolution Reverb
IR-1 Parametric Convolution Reverb V2
IR-L Light Convolution Reverb
Linear Phase Equalizer
Linear Phase Multiband
C4 Multiband Parametric Processor
Renaissance Reverb
Renaissance Channel (no ext. side-chain)
SoundShifter
Morphoder
TransX (Multi)
Q-Clone

and more will be made compatible in the future of course.

Does anyone know the answer to this question? Ableton, please chime in on this one!

i guess the answer is yes, as to the VST-host the UAD plugins are just regular VST plugins

How's the Virus plug's arpegiator? Does it still play it far to fast under certain circumstances?

And recall? Does it still sometimes 'forget' your patch, or randomly jump to different patches?

Really good news about the rest... :D Can't wait for the reelase now!

virus apreggiator is reasonably stable ( sometimes goes into hyper appreg. mode )
no forgetting patches , recall is perfect .

(sold my virus kb)

My specs :
pc amd 2000+ , 1 gig ram , emu 1212 card , uad-1 and powercore compact .

and yes can freeze and us plug somewhere else. (pretty good news right !!!)

Virus Powercore - Arpeggiator

Post by nickcoleman » Sat Jul 16, 2005 5:10 pm

Live 5.0b16 Virus Powercore Arpeggiator still not synchronising with external (Ableton) tempo. tempo all over the place. changes according to ASIO buffer size (using asio4all).it seems to be the most stable (tc buffer setting of 4) when ASIO buffer size set to 2048 samples.but still loses sync. at lower ASIO buffer settings it does go into hyper mode.

Also had major crash turning off masterx (have sent the live doc to beta). performance seems better though.
