A FAST sample search? What up with that?

Post by RD444 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 6:13 am

Why can't the sample search be fast?

maybe search the "filename first"
THEN
match the sample?
  • XP take 2 mins
  • Ableton 2 days (i'm not exaggerating)]

The bigger the project the more out of time it will be.

Just out of question do you have "automatic rescan on search" ON?
Because I felt just the same when I started using search but then I found out you can scan your sample library in to a database to speed up the searches.

For those that want to know how this is done here's what I do....
  • First you go to Preferences -> File/Folder and turn OFF "Automatic Rescan on Each Search"
    Now exit Preferences
In the browser window on the left hand side click on either 1 or 2 or the 3 folders.
Select the top level of the Samples folder you want in your database.
Now click on the Search button at the top of the browser.
Just press enter in the search box so the search is blank and immediately press stop.
The "search" text in the button should now change to "rescan"
Click rescan and it will now scan your samples folder.
This will take a while...(You can see an orange progress circle on the 1 or 2 or the 3 folders (Depending which one you chose).
Thats it..
You can now search for things like "Kick" and it will come back much faster than searching your file system each time.

NOTE: to add new samples you need to rescan the newly add samples to add it to your database but you don't have to rescan the whole damn library just the folders with the new samples ;)

cheers

A couple of questions:

1 does this 'speed up' the "manage files/manage project/missing files" search?

2 also does it create loads of those ableton image files in each folder (ableton live clip settings)?

A1. I don't think if it does. But what you can do is use the search to replace them -
  • Do a search for the missing file name(s)
  • Open the the missing file list under the file management window
  • From the search results drag the found sample over to the missing sample and drop it on it.
  • Done
A2. No it just indexes the file system. Ableton only creates the analysis file when you use the sample in your projects for the first time.

i cant get this to work

i select folder 1 ICON.
hit search
remove text - the go button, does nothing but flash?

if I enter text in the box like 'kick' Ableton stops responding most times?

when i click stop (if it works) i cant see any rescan option?

not sure whats going on :(
